that night, as she lay awake in her family’s cramped home, listening to the sound of her parents’ exhausted breaths, the whispers came again—only this time, they weren’t mocking. they were coaxing, tempting, promising her something more. if she wanted to be part of their world, she couldn’t just beg for a place in it. she had to take it.

and so, she did.

from that moment on, she vowed she would not just chase after the rich—she would become one of them, and if she had to lie, play games, and sell pieces of herself to carve her way in, then so be it. the world had never given her anything freely. why should she hesitate to take what she deserved?

keeping up with their standards came at a cost, and she quickly realized that money was power—power she did not have. so, she found new ways to acquire it, not just through petty theft but through something far more dangerous. she stole from the hearts of men who mistook her desperation for innocence, leading them believe they had claimed a piece of her, all while she reached into their wallets with delicate hands. the more she took, the more she changed. luxuries began replacing necessities, lies became second nature, and the reflection staring back at her in the mirror was someone she barely recognized. her parents noticed the difference—the expensive clothes, the late nights, the growing distance in her eyes—but they never asked. maybe they already knew.

but yeseul had made her choice.

the first time she had stolen, she had owed something in return. the first time she had lied, she had owed another truth to bury it.
