As children grow, they are told what to do and how to act - taught to conform. The Catholic Church used to follow this same mindset, especially with homosexuals. With Pope Francis, they are taught to be themselves and blossom into their best selves. Religion used to mainly shame others for being different and to teach others how to get to heaven. It is very important to the Catholic Church to spread the word of God to everyone. The bell is tolled at the start of masses in order to be a friendly symbol of hope. Many churches have abandoned the bell or no longer ring it, but bell ringing used to be an art form. The key to changing the future is understanding the past. As people discover more about what has happened in the past, the more they understand what they hope to change in the future. This is the same with homosexuality in the Church. As they are hoping to preach acceptance of everyone, Catholics have to understand how they have been closed to others in the past. It is important for the church to be a welcoming environment. In order to make sure everyone who attends feels safe, the church grounds are well maintained and open. The Catholic Church has gained the stigma of being very strict and exclusive after years of that being the truth. However, even now that the Church is making an effort to make scrub away the past, it will take a long time for people to accept and realize the openness of the Catholic Church. Sometimes, entering a church can be intimidating, but (especially in a diverse area such as a college) seeing all of the people brought together by their religion. Also, everything in the church is made to be very clear. Therefore, it was no surprise when the Church started teaching that homosexuality could be "cured" in childhood during the fifteenth century. Pope Francis is considered a radical pope. He has been addressing issues that have been stifled in the past by other popes.
