For the first time, an airplane powered by the sun flew around the world. It landed in the city of Abu Dhabi last week.
The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. Its wings absorb power from the sun. Batteries on the plane store the power.
The batteries power the motor and propeller. Last spring, the plane took off in Abu Dhabi. It is in the Middle East. The plane crossed both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It flew for more than 23 days using no gas.
During daylight, the wings charged the plane’s batteries using the sun. The pilot also soared high during the day and glided down at night. This saved power.
