We can look at environmental issues and how they affect different populations. We are able to tie these together and the students see it on a personal level.

Do your students know how to ask questions? This is a skill that has to be practiced. At the beginning of the year my students ask obvious questions, like what does the mitochondria do for the cell. By the end of the year they are answering those simple questions and are asking high level questions. Every year my students are getting better at this and the reason is because I am asking better questions. I try not to answer questions straightforward but answer a question with a little flare that leaves the questions open for further investigation.

Solution fluency is being able to work through a question. Students learn as they work through a problem. A challenge to this is that students have to ask those essential questions to learning. The benefits are that the students are doing the investigations and they are doing the learning through the process.
