On November 15, 1884, Otto Von Bismarck held the Berlin conference, to divide up the territory in Africa. King Leopold claimed the Congo for his own personal use. This is when all the tragedies started. From then, Leopold sent Henry M Stanley to explore, and help start colonization in the Congo. Together, Stanley and Leopold took advantage of a language barrier and signed treaties with the congolese people to take their land. Soon after that, they turned the Congo into a slave plantation, exploring the Congolese people, to get large amounts of rubber. Stanley used an army called the Force Publique to control the Congolese people. These atrocities all happened because of Henry M Stanley's exploration through the Congo, and his new mentalities he brought.
