State officials have confirmed 1,021 Zika infections this year, with 174 mosquito-borne cases and 842 travel-related cases, including 106 pregnant women.

All territories of the U.S. have seen some form of transmission of the virus and health threats range from the merely bothersome flu-like effects to the quite serious implications of Microcephaly in infants and Guillaine-Barre syndrome in adults.  

Government funding to battle the virus has just recently been made available and may well serve as evidence of the lack of effective testing and treatment solutions currently available. 

The Zika virus has proven to be both resilient and deceptive for public health officials as it has caught them off-guard virtually every step of the way.  And getting in front of the problem has been an enormous challenge as the virus appears to be continuing on unabated. Confounded by the Zika virus, public health officials nonetheless must remain steadfast as this appears to be a long-term battle.
