In the athletic training profession, setting goals for your patient's rehabilitation is important to the progress of their injury. During the 3071 class, I learned how to develop different kinds of goals and objectives in order to track a behavior and/or the progress of an athlete. It is also important to give outcome objectives in order to see the big picture and where the patient should be at the end.

It is important to choose health planning model that will fit with your target population as well as the behavior that you are trying to change. With athletic training, we have to adapt and change our way of treating athletes to fit how they best recover. Some athletes take initiative and are willing to complete their rehabilitation, however, others need to be pushed and need more supervision. In order to effectively care for our athletes, we need the ability to choose different models and different ways to approach rehab.

Needs Assessment

When planning to change a behavior or environment, you need to understand your population first. It is important to research and find out what the community or population really needs before assuming any behaviors that need to be changed. For example, some people may assume that the most important aspect of a baseball athlete is their shoulder, however, their hip range of motion plays a major role in their ability to throw a baseball and how it affects their other extremities. When conducting a needs assessment, it is best to review the population as a whole and find out what may be being overlooked in order to correct certain behaviors.
