Palms are sweating 

Anxiety Spreading

Fans watching you all around 

Pause 

Take a breath

And swing with 

Heart. 

Fans still watching

Just hit this one 

Over the pitcher's mound 

First Pitch 

Whoosh

A miss

Second Pitch 

Whoosh 

Another miss

Come on Kirk dont strike out 

The fans hope

Has almost run out

Many thought the other team 

Had the game 

But that fate was about to change

Bang 

A hit that was about to go down 

in history 

A hit opposing fans will take bitterly 

That they had lost by a single hit 

Losing by the smallest bit 

And there it was 

The final pitch 

The ball came to Kirk 

In slow motion 

CRACK 

Fan's eyes in awe 

The ball traveling though the air

No one thought this would 

Come upon 

And

It's gone. 

Kirk won the game 

Kirk shall be a name 

To go down in fame 

Kirk Gibson. 

Kirk Gibson steps up to the plate

Injured and swollen, he doesn't look so great

Bottom of the 9th inning, one out to go 

Will he make it or break it? Nobody knows

He looks Dennis Eckersly in the eye,

Holds his bat up to his shoulder,

With determination and confidence,

Despite pain with the burden the weight of boulders

Eckersly throws the ball.

Swing.

The ball flies up into the crowd.

Foul, Strike.

Overcome with pain,

He cannot lose this game.

Kirk lifts his bat again.

Swing, foul, strike.

An anxious crowd surrounds him

An anxious team supports him

An anxious feeling inside of him

He lifts his bat on more time

The ball flies.

The crowd nervously watches the ball

It's going,

No one can believe it.

Screaming, cheering

Hearts racing, eyes widening

Palms sweating, feet hurting

Heart thumping 

Ears clogged 

Everything is gone

The pitcher.

Ready.

Waiting for the moment

Ready.

Everyone gasping 

Everyone cheering

Everyone jumping 

Everyone wishing 

Hit.

Run. 

Home.

The night to prove yourself

The dust clears as he steps on the plate 

The crowd cheers

But not as loud as his beating heart

His injuries bring back fears

Fears of failure 

Kirk swings and hits empty air

The crowd holds its breath

The tension floating above their chairs

The pitchers eyes narrow

He takes in Kirks stance

Looking for weaknesses

He misses and is down to his last chance

The whole world is watching

Waiting for this failure

Or win

Waiting for Kirks baseball cure

He swings and connects with the ball

It soars through the night sky

Touching the clouds 

Waving the crowds good bye

Attempting to Defy his injuries 

Hoping to accomplish impossible

When every one thought it was improbable 

The dodgers pull him out of Thin air  

With two fouls and one left to go 

He swings his bat 

And hits the light back 

Scores a home run 

 jogging  to home plate 

Holding his side 

Bleeding with pride 

Accomplishing the impossible  

Doubt in everyone's minds,

In his mind.

Pitcher throws,

People gasp, foul.

Pitcher throws, again,

People gasp, foul, again.

Now, with even more doubt, 

He sets up for another failure.

Pitcher throws, again,

People hold their breath,

Wait, wait, wait.

Silence.

It hits a stadium light and sparks fly everywhere.

It's a home run! 

His team runs onto the field and everyone is cheering his name:

"Gibson! Gibson! Gibson!"

The announcer then says:

"Homerun! Kirk Gibson everybody!

And the Dodgers win the World Series."

To some people,

This word stops them from the unknown

To Kirk Gibson,

It is something that is always there when you go to sleep

Something that is always there in the morning.

And something that will inspire him forever 

Standing in one box,

In front of thousands of people,

One box that determines it all.

With the bright lights shining on the field

And the breeze that follows with it

2 outs.

Bottom of the 9th inning

He steps up to the box

With chills going down his spine

He looks at the catcher and then at the pitcher

First pitch,

flies by like a flash,

Fouled it off.

Second pitch,

Fouls it again.

Two strikes now.

Pressure, nervous, anxious, scared

All words that describe Kirk 

The last pitch is thrown 

Right. Down. The middle. 

Kirk swings his bat with all of his power within him.

The crowd goes wild, 

lights begin flash, 

And the ball is flying freely

Sure enough, it ends up outside the field

First time a homerun is hit off the pitcher.

all is now calm,

Kirk had now beat,
the impossible.

And hits it into the crowd. 

Pain rushing down his spine 

And blood on his shirt 

He keeps preserving

With every last ounce, 

Winds up for another swing 

But barely misses it 

But as he steps up to the plate on last time 

he feels some hope 

Winding up he focus on the ball 

The ball is thrown 

As it hits the bat 

You can see everything 

The obstacles and the challenges 

The ball hits the light 

And he scores a home run 

Jogging to home plate 

Everyone is celebrating 

He did the impossible

Two hurt legs.

Unannounced,

Too injured to play

First pitch, 

Foul.

The crowd goes crazy, 

Kirk Gibson had done the unexpected,

He had won the game.

Kirk was ready to give the fans a fright

There goes strike one then two

Now what does he do

He takes a deep breath and says play ball

Next thing you know it's over the wall

A swing that changed history

How he did it will stay a mystery

Blood dripping

Ribs cracking,

But why must you continue through this moment,

Retire your body early before you can rest,

As would a son questioning his father,

Hopes in the heavens 

Two injured legs 

Ripping their useless claws in 

The air rushing out

The fans watched on

Hearts facing down 

They didn't expect much

They hoped for the best 

But didn't expect

And yet the ball went flying

For He, the Impossible

Had been proven Possible after all

Above the perpetual falling of dreams

Which were not forever falling after all

Making their climb back Up.

A place to shine

Kirk rose up 

And took some pride 

For he was about to make history come alive 

He took his spotlight 

Even with some wounds 

As he was about to hit the ball to the dunes 

He struck with force 

Man, you should've seen it ''twas like a racing horse 

The crowd hollerd and cheered for the other team feared 

Every game

The crowd,

On the edge of their seats,

Nothing new

But you,

Your play

Weary and feeble,

Stepped onto the plate

He can't make it, I thought

No way, I thought

Gibson's first hit was a flop

Ha, 

What did I say boy 

The second throw, another fail

Where does he think he's going with this,

No one could beat these odds,

No matter the talent,

Especially bruised up and battered

The suspense was rising,

But not worth my time

He swings

Wait, 

What was that 

He hits the ball,

A home run

Impossible!

The kid did it,

Gibson did it

He hit the ball

Badly injured but motivated, 

Kirk Gibson limps onto the plate, 

Hearts pounding, 

Blood rushing, 

Play ball,

Swing, 

Foul 1,

Swing, 

Foul 2,

Tick tock

Not a single sound in the crowd,

Not a breath to be heard,

It's a swing, 

But not a miss, 

It's a home run

As he runs around the bases fans cheered,

Players leaped, 

Others weeped, 

But he 

Has done it.

 

Kirk shuffles up to the plate

Everyone watching

He can't escape his fate. 

Flashing lights and screaming crowds

All are watching him. 

So much at stake,

Will he make it or 

break?

The first pitch whizzes past, 

His swing's fast but cannot make the ball blast.

The pitcher's lightning ball is near. 

With all his might he drives his bat forward,

Bat and ball collide

The wind takes it out of here.

It is all in his hands now

His friends praying and the crowd cheering

The pressure, is unimaginable.

The bottom of the 9th

He is injured, but one swing is all he needs

Both sides ready, pitcher sweating 

Pitcher throws and Kirk Gibson swings

It flys overhead but it's not enough, foul.

He sets again, pitcher throws, and the ball is fouled once again.

One more ball is all he need 

But that one ball, will decide his fate.

Legend or failure,

With his legacy on the line he takes his stand,

The tension is clear and the crowd silent.

The ball is thrown and Gibson swings 

He nails the ball and sees it fly 

It smacks the lights and it was quite a sight.

The legend stepped up to the bat,

and into the dirt he spat.

He was battered and hurt,

but the player named Kirk,

was ready to prevail,

on a massive scale.

As the ball was flying,

He gave a big swing.

The ball hit a light,

spewing sparks that we bright.

Kirk had showed the Athletics who's boss,

and given Oklahoma a substantial loss.

The moment when the impossible became possible.

The moment when history was made, to be engraved for all eternity.

The moment when the odds are stacked up,

higher than the light in which he destroyed.

His ribs, his hand, his ankle, his person

his leg, his knee, his body, but not his pride.

Not his faith, not his soul, and most definitely not his mind.

His feelings, cool and concise, 

he had a job, he knew this well.

And in that moment, two outs, bottom of the ninth, 

he knows he only has so many chances.

First one gone, a foul ball.

He is running out of time. 

And in that moment, that one solitary moment, he sees the one, a tempting offer.

And in that moment, that one solitary moment, he swings, his fate decided.
And in that moment, that one solitary moment, his job was completed, his legacy defined.

And in that moment, that one solitary moment, ‘a' moment, became ‘the' moment.

Strained hamstring they sing, this will not hurt me

I am unannounced, unfazed, unexpected, this will not hurt me

Vin says I am not on deck, I will not play, this will not hurt me

The at bat before me goes by quick, this will not hurt me

My heart is racing, my head is pounding, this will not hurt me

I come to the plate and I know the crowd is wondering, this will not hurt me

I am already injured, i know, i know, this will not hurt me

First pitch is thrown, crack of the bat, there it goes, this will not hurt me

I watch it go down the line high in the air, "Foul Ball!", this will not hurt me

I jog back, pick up the bat, this will not hurt me

I am in deep pain, limping strongly, this will not hurt me

Second pitch now, crack of the bat there it goes!, not again!, this will not hurt me

The ball tails strongly in the wind, this will not hurt me

It's over the wall, it's gone, its gone, this will not hurt me

Trot to first, second, third, and home, this will not hurt me

I hear Vin's poetic call, High fly ball into right, deep, she's gone, this will not hurt me

That's the game, this will not hurt me

The crowd is in a frenzy, this will not hurt me

I am congratulated over and over, this will not hurt me
