A. Overview and Rationale:

The purpose of this unit plan is to guide students in understanding the importance of what a “good citizen” is as well as how to be a good citizen. Students will examine examples of people who have been good citizens throughout history and also examples of ways in which children their age can contribute to being a good citizen in society. Through examination of the images, students will be able to engage in a whole-group class discussion to discuss their observations and thoughts on the given images. Students will collaborate in whole-group activities involving a thinking map, sorting cards, a song, and primary source images of historical figures who were important citizens. At the end of the unit, students will demonstrate ways in which they are good citizens within their society (at home, at school, and in their neighborhood) through illustrations and brief labels.

B. Overarching Question:

Why is it important to have rules?

C. Inquiry Question:

What are the characteristics of a good citizen?

D. Supporting Questions:

What types of rules do we have?

Which rule do you think is the most important?

What are the consequences for breaking the rules?

What is the best way to work out a conflict with someone else?

E. History-social science content:

People can be good citizens in various ways such as helping others, doing acts of kindness, following the rules, and being leaders in their community. Throughout history, people from different backgrounds have become important citizens who fought to help others in society by being leaders not only for their community but for the world over all.

Being a good citizen means being capable to follow the rules and if the rules are unfair, then finding ways to help others by fighting for equal rights for everyone. In addition, being a good citizen is being able to behave in society by having manners and helping one another when someone needs helps. Not only can people help each other through acts of kindness, but people can also help the world they live in by keeping their communities clean by not littering, picking up trash, recycling, and planting plants to make their communities look nice.

Students can be good citizens by following the rules, such as sharing and taking turns, and knowing the consequences of breaking them if they are not followed. In addition, helping their classmates when they are in need and also being polite to others are some ways to instill students to be good citizens.

The activities in my unit incorporate culturally diverse perspectives through the use of ethnic diversity. The first lesson includes a read-aloud story consisting of characters from different ethnic backgrounds; the main character is of a colored background. For my second lesson, students will be introduced to good citizens that have made a positive impact throughout history, such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Ghandi, and Malala. Both male and female figures of different backgrounds are presented to students to encourage the appreciation of diversity among our history and to show how people from all walks of life and backgrounds have fought for a good cause to help others. The final assignment for the end of the unit on day three will consist of a booklet that will allow students to share how they are good citizens at home, at school, and in their neighborhood. In that assignment, students will draw an illustration of their life at home, at school, and in their neighborhood and tell how they portray good citizenship in their everyday lives.
