Diversos autores y organismos han aportado definiciones que permiten comprender la naturaleza de estos documentos, resaltando tanto sus características técnicas como su valor funcional dentro de los procesos archivísticos.

 

El siguiente mapa tiene como propósito analizar diferentes concepciones en torno a los documentos especiales, destacando las similitudes y diferencias entre las propuestas.

Lo que le confiere ese rasgo distintivo que permite catalogarlo como un acervo especial.


En este sentido, la mayor parte de definiciones enfatiza la diferencia en cuanto al soporte de este tipo de documentos, ademas de añadir la forma en como se presenta la información como elemento diferenciador, es decir, el hecho de que estos documentos no presenten una textualidad convencional, hace que para diversos autores, estos acervos puedan ser considerados como especiales.
