In the fall of 2020, I was taking a zoology class, and we were learning about what the types of non-native species. We also learned how not all non-native species are harmful, like bell peppers and tomatoes. They are both non-native to the United States, but they also don’t harm native species and the ecosystem. While not all non-native species are harmful, the ones that do cause harm are called invasive species. The harm caused by invasive species can be environmental or economic. After the lesson, I felt so enamored with invasive species I decided to do some research on invasive species in the United States. The first article that popped up was about Burmese pythons in Florida and how they have decreased the number of small native mammals. I was appalled when I figured out how they got to Florida. They were brought as pets and were released into the wild by irresponsible owners. Where they had no predator to control their population to make it worst they reproduce really quickly. I also found out about how goldfishes are invasive in some states because how they reproduce very quickly and can take away nutrients and food from native species. Goldfishes also became invasive because of how people were dumping and releasing goldfishes into the wild.

The next day I talk about how releasing goldfish in the wild has become a serious problem in some states. She talks about how most of the goldfishes in the classroom were from students who didn’t want their goldfishes and how she rather students gave her their unwanted pets because she doesn’t want their pets to possibly become invasive species that can have devasting on the ecosystem. We talk about humans' long history of introducing species to new areas which could have possible devasting effects. After this conversation, I wonder what can we do to help ensure that potentially invasive species don’t get introduced into the ecosystem and we can do that by drawing a line. How should the population draw the line on introducing potentially invasive species into new environments?

( Word Count 347)

Of the 27 respondents, 21 (77.8%) thought invasive species are native species that cause harm to economic and environmental sources, while 2 (7.4%) thought invasive species are species that can cause harm to economic and environmental sources. 2 (7.4%) thought invasive species are native species that cause harm to economical and environmental sources and 2 (7.4%) thought invasive species are non-native species. My second question asked how should we draw the line in introducing potentially invasive species into new environments only 6 (22.2%) said we should draw the lines based on pros and cons while 21 (77.8%) said to draw the line based on the possible effects of introducing a potentially invasive species. The third question is, do you think we should be able to introduce potentially invasive species into new environments for any of these reasons? This question was a check box question. Out of the 27, 19 (70.4%) said we should be able to introduce potentially invasive species to help protect animals from climate change, while 8 (29.6%) said they wouldn't allow it to help protect animals from climate change. 14 (51.9%) said they would allow the introduction of potentially invasive to help control pests while 13 (48.1%) said they would allow for it even to control pests. 12 (44.4%) thought we should be able to introduce potentially invasive species into a new environment while 15 (55.6%) thought no we should allow potentially introducing invasive species to help agriculture. The last question is, where should we draw the line on introducing potentially invasive species into new environments? Only 26 (96.3%) draw the line when it didn't benefit the environment, while only one student drew the line when it didn't benefit humans.

I am glad that people are agreeing to the idea of moving a potentially invasive to help protect them from climate. I also disagree with how half of the respondents agree that people should be able to introduce a potentially invasive species to control pests.

The picture on the left shows the environment before the Burmese python and Goldfish. It is thriving with plants and animals while on the right it shows how after the Goldfish was introduced into the pond, it out-populated the native fish and took away nutrients from the pond which cause fewer water plants to grow. Meanwhile, on the land, the Burmese python was released, which has caused a decline in the small native mammal populations, such as rabbits and squirrels. Also, you can see how fewer nutrients have caused fewer eggs to hatch because how frogs are very sensitive to change.
