Schools with strong culture will benefit too--this is definitely something I want to do as a school leader during in service week. I am a huge fan of Facing History. I would tell my students that it is important not only for our own individual selves to know who we are but for our group to know each other's stories. I wanted out our classroom to make those connections with each other and throughout our social sciences units we would reflect back on our identities to make connections with historical figures. We've been trying to think about organizations that can come in to support us, books we can read, and more. After this experience, I think sharing stories is exactly what we need to do. I've established a lot of trust with the teachers I support by being so open about my struggles as an early teacher. It is tragic that people are conditioned to feel shame about their failures and mistakes. Mistakes are such powerful learning opportunities, especially for teachers.
