Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was meant to expand from coast to coast. Driven by economic interests, it also reflected racism toward Native Americans and Mexicans. The failure of the Wilmot Proviso led many Northerners to believe that the war was motivated by a desire to expand slavery.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act passed in 1854, introduced the principle of "popular sovereignty," allowing settlers in the Kansas and Nebraska territories to vote on the legality of slavery. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which had prohibited slavery in the region. As a result, it intensified the national debate over slavery, leading to violent conflicts known as "Bleeding Kansas" and deepening the divide in the nation.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act benefited the South by allowing the possibility of slavery to spread into new territories, previously free under the Missouri Compromise. This opened opportunities for the South to expand slavery where it could economically thrive. Conversely, the North felt betrayed, as the repeal of the Missouri Compromise threatened free labor and disrupted the balance between free and slave states.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act heightened sectional tensions, directly leading to the violent conflict and political polarization that precipitated the Civil War.

The Dred Scott decision protected slavery under the U.S. Constitution. Proslavery Americans welcomed the Court’s ruling as proof they had been right during the previous few decades’ struggles against abolitionists. In contrast, abolitionists convinced many state legislatures to declare the Dred Scott decision not binding within their borders.

The South benefitted from the Dred Scott decision, as it protected slavery in the territories and denied Congress the power to limit its expansion.

In my opinion, the South benefitted from the Dred Scott decision, as it protected and expanded the institution of slavery by declaring that Congress could not ban slavery in the territories.

One famous abolitionist, John Brown, chose to confront slavery through violence. In 1856, believing he was chosen by God to end slavery, Brown led family members and fellow abolitionists in an attack against pro-slavery settlers in Kansas, resulting in the deaths of five men. Brown's raid intensified sectional tensions and deepened the divide between pro-slavery and anti-slavery supporters.

The North benefited from the raid by drawing attention to the abolitionist cause, which inspired anti-slavery sentiments and strengthened their resolve to end slavery.

I believe the raid heightened the divisions between North and South. It demonstrated that slavery would not be easily resolved and contributed to the tensions leading to the Civil War.

His win caused many Southern states to secede from the Union.

The North benefitted from Lincoln's election. The North wanted to stop the spread of slavery, and Lincoln supported this. The South did not benefit because they feared Lincoln would end slavery, which was important to their economy.

This event was very important because it showed how divided the country was over slavery. Lincoln's election made the South feel threatened and led to the Civil War.
