Visual impairment affects the types of experiences that a child has, such as the ability to travel within his or her environment and participate in their community. These factors vary depending on the severity of the vision loss.

Individuals with vision impairments have the same intellectual capacity as students who are sighted or who have good vision. But the reason that they get lower grades seems to be because they cannot obtain information visually. Their interaction with the environment is severely limited.

In socialization, individuals with vision impairments cannot respond visually to people, such as by maintaining eye contact during speech, smiling at people, or reaching out to touch people nearby, because these are not innate skills. They also do not know about things like how they look, clothes, grooming, and other social skills.

They may also exhibit stereotypic behavior, which is a variety of repetitive bodily movements.

When it comes to travel, a child with a visual impairment usually travels with a cane, a dog, or a sighted guide, and they require training in orientation and mobility.

Children with visual impairments begin vocational training at an early age if early intervention is provided or a preschool class is available. Vocational skills are simple stuff like going to the restroom, bathing, dressing, preparing meals, and things like this.

When I work with a student with a visual impairment, I think I would have to spend extra time explaining to them what they cannot see and making sure that they understand what is on the board. I can do this by creating a lesson that is not just visual but also vocal so that they can hear and get an idea about what is going on. I would need to create an environment that is inclusive and positive. The challenge that I may face is getting them to participate, but they also bring a lot of things to the classroom because they are creative and have a unique perspective.
