As opposed to songs that sink into rhythms and ensure stability and security, these pieces of music consistently move forward and outward, "according to the logic that suits it best" (Ratcliff 209). Exclusivity is the idea that a certain genre seeks a particular audience-- typically an audience that has a small community but is "highly regarded" by many. These two elements of music affect every type of music across all genres, because these two elements define a song based on its larger significance: the complexity of its rhythms or the importance of the song in a community. Its "soulful" feeling results from its stretch of rhythm and tone, which for some reason feels more intense and emotional in a piece of music.
