Even though Zwerner had expressed concern for her and others safety earlier that day as well as a week prior administration did nothing to prevent this incident from happening. The boy had taken the gun from his home despite the parents of the 6-year-old saying their firearms were "secured".

They were in search of a parolee at large. The suspect was found in a shed. After the refusal of the suspect police used a chemical agent to try and force the suspect out. The suspect responded to the chemical agent by opening the shed and opening fire on the officers. One officer was able to return fire but the suspect escaped. The SWAT was alerted in the search for the suspect. He was later found dead. The cause of death is unknown.

Brian Fraser, a sophomore, Alexandria Verner, a junior, and Arielle Anderson, also a junior were the students killed by McRae. After the shooting took place Anthony took his own life. Officers later found notes in his pocket. In the notes, which are dated one day before the shooting, he wrote that he "will be shooting up MSU." He also wrote, "They hate me," several times and noted that he was hurt and “tired of being rejected."

Around 8pm that night the 2 girls were left unattended in the parents bedroom. “The 3-year-old gained access to a loaded, semi-automatic pistol. Family members heard a single gunshot. They ran into the room and found the small toddler, 4 years old, unresponsive,” Sheriff Gonzalez stated.

Emmanuel Soray died from a single gunshot wound to the face at 1:45pm. A 27-year-old woman was rushed to Kings County Hospital in critical condition after suffering a shot to the torso and a  40-year-old man sustained a shot to the leg, and a woman, 33, was shot in the arm and buttocks. As of now there is little information one the events that happened that day and there has been no arrest made.
