Juliet is the reason Sam dies in the first place but Sam doesn't know that right away and neither do we. While Sam and her friends were driving home from the party, Juliet jumps in front of the car to commit suicide. The girl driving, Lindsay, screams "Sykes" but Sam misheard and thinks she swore. As she gets farther into her the last week of her life, she realizes that what they got was a person. And not just any person; they hit Juliet Sykes. Slowly, Sam starts to figure out that Juliet is the key to make all of this stop. All Sam has to do is save her! Everyone knows by the beginning of the book Sam will still end up dying but when she does, it's in an unexpected way. I feel like the author could have made a smoother transition between the major event of the book and the last page. It felt very choppy, like Oliver was in a rush to finish and wrote the first thing that came to mind. However, it fit the book. This novel has peaks of action and then something I would describe as limbo and that's exactly how the book's ending feels. This huge event happens and then there's nothing of importance after; the ending is just words that mean nothing. I would have Juliet helping herself and taking care of her mental health, if Lindsay turned her life around and stopped being a superficial brat, and if Kent ever figured out that Sam loved him even if she didn't really get to show it before she died. I would also have Sam's little sister knows how much of a hero she is for saving Juliet.
