Let's think to where a feather comes from, a bird. Birds are free and can go where they please. The feathers they lose are like a sign of where they've been. Many birds have different types of feathers, whether it is for showing off or keeping warm. Just a like a bird, when the feather is first dropped it is on it's own.  Floating around in the wind or being picked up by the interested passerby. Feather's are considered to be light, I think they carry a ton. See without feathers a bird would be naked and they wouldn't have those adaptive features to survive.
