Write a brief statement describing your personal vision for mathematics instruction. Think about the following:
What do you believe is essential for all students to experience in a math classroom?
What values, goals, or practices do you prioritize in math teaching and learning?
How does your current math curriculum align with your vision? by David Senatore

My vision for mathematics instruction is that each student experiences a joy of learning the subject in some way. I hope all students can productively struggle through problems and persevere in solving problems that they first see as challenging. I prioritize praising and speaking about misconceptions or mistakes that students make in their solving and I always make it a goal to create an environment where students feel safe to share out their errors and what they have learned from them. My current curriculum allows me to choose and supplement activities that I feel are valuable within a unit and provide students with experiences where their misconceptions are more evident (mathshell.org FALs).

Every student should experience public success at least once, in the math classroom. There are some students who have never been celebrated in a math classroom and that is sad. Make every effort to find SOMETHING positive for that struggling student to share. With every 'right' attempt, that student gains more confidence.

I believe it's essential for all students to experience a classroom where mistakes are okay. Mistakes happen and it's the mindset we have thats important to our growth. It's important for them to have a safe place where their classmates are there a resource and are also there for them to offer assistance. In math I prioritize incorporating real world context, so students can understand the value of it.

They should feel comfortable to make mistakes and utilize them to clarify misconceptions. If they are making an error, there is sure to be another student who is making a similar one.

Math Vision

The essential for all students to experience in a math classroom is while learning a new concept, the part where they try, make mistake, learn from mistake, and get better and better at the fact that mistakes are not scary, they will overcome those mistakes eventually, the scary part is where they're are afraid to take risk and try new things.

The goals and practices I prioritize in math teaching and learning are students understanding the fact that we all need to take risk, we all make mistakes as a human being, even Einstein make mistakes and ask questions. Students shouldn't judge each other on the mistakes, students should support each other by helping one another to improve with the mistakes they made and this should be put in to teaching and practice everyday between the teacher and the students.

The curriculum align with my vision by giving students opportunities to share out with no wrong answer during the first 5 minutes of class with questions like notice and wonder, similarities and differences, etc.. It also has a lot of discussion based questions to encourage discussion among peers so students can explore the math concept on their own rather than teacher giving them the concept.

It is essential for students to experience safety in the math classroom. They should feel comfortable to ask questions and participate in problem solving. They should be given multiple opportunities to practice skills and show understanding of material. I prioritize spiraling skills and scaffolding to support different types of learners. I want students to feel prepared for using these skills independently in other contexts and confident about their math abilities in general. I value urgency and collaboration the most for student learning.
