Her importance for manners and respect for others is strong, so much so that her usual literate speaking is washed away, and her speaking becomes turbulent. - ACTION: When Scout was bummed out from the disastrous first day of school, Calpurnia sensed this and treated the young girl to a nice serving of crackling bread. Not only is Calpurnia the cook of the family, but her role in Jem and Scout's life extends far beyond just a hired worker. She plays a large part in helping to develop the kids into people of good nature and intentions. As seen at the beginning of the book when Calpurnia scolds Scout for her naive comments on Walters' table manners, it is expressed that Calpurnia helps to enforce and build virtuous personalities in Jem and Scout. - Andrew

- THINKS/FEELS: Through the eyes of Scout, Calpurnia may come across as a tyrannical being, but her intentions originate from the greater good.  Becoming an almost motherly figure in the Finch family, Calpurnia cares and helps to nourish the family. Calpurnia is always acting on the well-being of others, whether it's helping Jem and Scout live a better life, or welcoming guests and comforting others. - Andrew

- SYMBOL: Calpurnia's role in the family can be represented by bread. Not only is it a representation of her helpfulness and the value provided to the Finchs, but it also speaks for the personality of Calpurnia. When Scout was down, Calpurnia treated her to some crackling bread.
