Advisors should serve as guideposts who will help students make the best decision for themselves and their academic careers. Students should have autonomy over their academic choices, but advisors should keep them informed about those choices, and help the student come to the best decision.

As the bridge between academic and student affairs, it's important for an academic advisor to seek out opportunities to collaborate with both sides of the institution. Giving a presentation on helpful study habits while juggling a social life or asking professors to give extra credit for attending an advising appointment are both ways to collaborate with different departments on campus. This gives you the opportunity to forge connections with campus resources that your students can utilize.
