A family’s economic circumstances can have a particularly profound effect on their emotions. Negative effects resulting from economic pressures, as demonstrated in the family stress model, “can take many forms, such as despondency, depression, anger, or aggression.” (4.1, page 2) Ultimately, however, “the emotional response of the family and the individual are what determines the psychological effect of the event.” (4.1, page 2)

Effective parenting, which includes nurture alongside clear, concise discipline, can positively influence adolescent behaviors and promote prosocial behaviors. In addition, parental monitoring may help children disassociate with deviant peers and protect them. However, “high levels of family conflict and poor communication skills disrupt parenting and family relations [and] reduce children’s emotional security.” (4.1, page 3)

Our peers have major influence on our lives, even when we act like they don’t. Though peers can have positive impacts on each other, the opposite is also true. Some may try to convince you to adopt negative behaviors or habits, and this pressure can be very hard to resist. Related to this is the finding that youths who have already engaged in risky behaviors may believe themselves to be part of the majority, when in fact, the opposite is true.

Fortunately, I’ve been blessed to have very great parents who nurture me and, when needed, discipline me. This effective parenting has allowed our family to grow very close together, and overall, has left a very positive impact. However, certain economic stresses as of late have made slight negative impacts, as there are times when my parents seem more irritable and angry than usual.

Once again thanks to effective parenting, I’ve been brought up with strict values of kindness and good behavior, and I’m very good at resisting negative peer pressure. Over Christmas Break, a friend of mine convinced me to watch a really good movie while I had nothing to do, and I still remember it even now. This was a positive impact because I was able to find a good movie to recommend to people.
