The many parks, the many green areas between the many historic buildings, clean streets and also the peaceful way of life of the inhabitants reinforce this impression. 

Pretoria lies only 60 kilometres north, about 400 meters lower than Johannesburg, and is at the same time also the whole opposite! Here, the correctness of the officials and not the hustle and bustle of a city ruled in downtown. 

In the course of 1999 adopted land reform, countless suburbs of Pretoria of city were administratively associated in recent years. This administrative unit now carries the name Tshwane, has an area of about 2,200 square kilometers and is about 2 million inhabitants live. 

The name Pretoria still remains, is a synonym for the former city limits and is the seat of the Government of South Africa.

History of Pretoria 

The APIES Valley has relatively lot of water and fertile soil, so that here long before the huge cattle Earth of the Zulus grazed a Reefing of the first Voortrekkers. When the great Trek in the 30s of the 19th century in the Valley arrived here quite quickly some Boers settled. 

The white farms were scattered over the Valley. 1853 Pretorius was begun on the Apies River by martinus with building a city, father, named his after andries Pretorius. This was the great hero and winner of the battle most stupid (blood) River and had the settlement of Transvaal promoted so decisively. 

1860 Pretoria became the capital of the Zuid as Republic (ZAR).In the first Boer War, the Boers won, finally, the capital Pretoria was besieged by the British in 1881. Long, the British held not resting and so the Second Boer War broke out in 1899, where this time after tough fighting the British had the upper hand. In June 1900, Pretoria finally had to capitulate.

The Cape, Natal, the Orange Free State was founded on May 31, 1910, and seat of Government was the Transvaal of the Union of South Africa and Pretoria again.
