When I first settled into Texas I thought it would be a great opportunity to grow rich. Me and my family were apart of the "Old Three Hundred" which means we were one of the original Texas settler families. It was great at first but then we found out that we could not own slaves. We brought our slaves with us to grow cotton but they were sent back to the South in 1829. I could never read any of the official documents because they were in Spanish. My wife and I new very little Spanish making it very hard to understand the Tejanos.

Moses Austin asked to start a colony in Texas and Spain agreed. In 1821 Mexico gained its independence from Spain. In 1821-1827 Austin attracted many American settlers to his new settlement. Americans were not happy with the laws in Mexico like not being able to own slaves so in 1833 Austin made a petition. It was to make Texas a self governing nation within Mexico. Antonio López de Santa Anna, the president agreed but the general did not agree and put Austin in jail. Battle of the Alamo was started when troops were sent to Texas but the Texans fought back. It showed the Texans that they would have to fight for their freedom to be free from Mexico. In 1836 Texas gained its independence from Mexico after the victory at San Jacinto. Texas adopted the nick name Lone Star Republic because their flag had one star on it and when they became an independent nation they raised this flag.

Those Americans are so disrespectful. Coming into our country acting like they own the place. They don't even have the decency to learn our language or at least attempt to speak it. They wanted Texas to be a free from Mexico just so they could keep their slaves. The Americans should be lucky we allowed them into our country and should have expected there to be laws. They will have to put up a good fight if they want Texas to gain its independence from Mexico. Good luck with that.
