We have had counselors follow students 9-12 for at least 6 years and it has proven effective and efficient. Duties that are specific to a grade level are shared between counselors and this has built a collaborative and team focused department.

We have been doing it for 9 years and believe the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Would not want to go back. Only negative is occasionally when a parent doesn't like the counselor. However, we still will not change a counselor. Everyone has to learn to work together.

We have been following the procedure with counselors for at least 7 years now and it works great. Previously, we moved students to specific grade level counselors each school year. I encountered 2-3 major issues (graduation issues), because the counselor was not familiar with the academic issue(s) of the student(s).

Cons - not every counselor has the skills set for addressing the needs of seniors and/or freshmen -plus those in the middle. It is important to tap into the skills of the counselors so they can better meet the needs of ALL students and the school. If there is a conflict, the student could potentially be "stuck."

The only 2 roadblocks for us switching to this would be the freshman counselor position being so crucial and the senior position. I believe the freshman position has been said to be ok so it would just be some difficulty getting the knowledge of the senior position to all of them. With so much money and attention paid to that it will be quite a challenge. As anyone whose had to hire a new senior counselor knows it is hard and to do that every year essentially would be a little scary.

We now have grade level counselors that move up each grade level (10 - 12) with that class, except for the Freshman Academy. I think the 9th grade counselor needs to have a certain type of personality and skill set (similar to a Freshman Academy administrator) to be successful. I think the 10th -12th rotation provides great opportunities: building relationships with students and families, professional development and building capacity in the department by learning different grade level tasks with support, and targeted work with one grade level at a time.
