<title>&quot;Fiction was useful as a reminder of the truths under the surface of what we argue about every day and was a way of seeing and hearing the voices, the multitudes of this country.&quot;</title>

<title>The quote taken from Barack Obama is what I chose as the statement that resonates most with me. I chose it because I think it accurately describes why we read any piece of literature. Reading has the ability to take you to places you&#39;ve never been, expand your mind in ways that classrooms cannot, and understand perspectives other than your own. It allows you to set apart the mundane from the extraordinary. It is the mindset that we enter into every time we look upon the pages of fiction, poetry, textbooks, or the Bible. </title>

<title>&quot; What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona&quot; introduces readers to a world on an Indian reservation. That particular setting is something we are not typically exposed to. It introduced certain cultural elements that are unfamiliar to us. It also explored an unusual friendship between two men, another factor not typically written about. </title>

<title>&quot;Fences&quot; allowed the reader to understand the truths that are not spoken everyday. It transported us to a world past; a world unfamiliar with us. It put things into perspective. It made the little issues that we encounter everyday become mundane in comparison to those issues of our nation&#39;s past. This single piece of work was one voice, speaking for thousands of people.</title>

<title>&quot; The House on Mango Street&quot; gave insight to a different class. It allowed access to a different social class and cultural group. It spoke of a young girl&#39;s battle. Personally, it opened up my eyes to a battle that a young girl had to fight. It was insightful because it is a battle that I never had to fight. </title>

<title>&quot; Those Winter Sunday&#39;s&quot; is a piece of work that I can relate to. Although it is not a brand new revelation, it is a gentle reminder. It, too, puts things into perspective. It brings you back to the place of thankfulness for everything you&#39;ve been given. It reminds you the daily fights that you encounter are insignificant in the grand scheme.</title>

<title>&quot;I, Too&quot; is similar to Fences. It transports readers back to a time that our country&#39;s history was drastically changed. It reminders us of the simple privileges that we have everyday. These are privileges that we too easily take for granted. </title>

<title>&quot; My Papa&#39;s Waltz&quot; allows the reader into the intimate setting of a family. It reminds us that every family is different. It creates insight to the silent/hidden battles that family&#39;s fight. It implies the quiet battle that form one into who they become. It shows the details of a family that are otherwise kept hidden. </title>

<title>The thing that provides the same experience as described, but is not literature- would be travel. I have been to multiple European countries, as well as a Missions Trip to Kenya. These experiences have single handedly changed my life. They have allowed me intimate access into someone else&#39;s life, culture, and day to day experience. It has given me new perspective on how countries around the world function. It has allowed me to fully realize how blessed I am to live in America. It has given me the opportunity to realize that the things I worry about are things that other people wish they had the chance to worry about. It has shown me that the circumstances and lifestyles that we read about in textbooks, still exist in the world. It has widened my scope of knowledge, sympathy, and love greater than anything else. </title>

<title>My favorite work from this semester is &quot; The House on Mango Street.&quot; This is because it clearly explained the life of someone completely different from me. It specifically detailed the life of someone from a different economic status as well as culture. It identified her home life, her upbringing, the expectations on her life, and how hard she had to work to achieve a greater future. When it comes to the specifics of her life, there was no gray space, nothing left to interpretation. It inspired me to think and be mindful. </title>
