Longhouses could be up to 300 feet long! They often were made to house 20 or more families. Each individual family was given a booth on each side of the narrow longhouse. Each of these booths had a wooden platform for sleeping, and a compartment at the top for essentials such as clothing, blankets, mats, pots, tools and weapons. Hanging from the rafters, there would have been dried herbs and meat. The longhouse would have been very dark and smoky. There were also around 10 fire pits in each longhouse. They make smoke holes in the roof of the longhouse that had pieces of cloth covering them. That way, when they lit the fires, they could then open the smoke holes, and when it was raining or snowing, they could close the smoke holes. These smoke holes were the only sources of light. Most longhouses also had fences built around them for protection in case of attack. On the inside of the fence, there were stairs built to the top of the roof, so archers could easily climb up and defend the village. The fence poles were also usually sharpened to spikes, so attackers would not try to climb over them.

Housing that Reflects Natural Resources and Climate

The Iroquois housing shows how they used their natural resources, such as trees and animals. They bent wooden poles to make the frame for the longhouse, and the tied large pieces of bark together to make roof shingles. They would have used sinew, a tough fibrous tissue uniting muscle to bone, as rope. The sinew would have come from deer, and any other animals they hunted. You can also tell the climate is colder in the winter, because each longhouse had around ten or twelve fireplaces in it. Also, there would have been animal skins draped around the outside of the longhouse to keep out drafts in the winter, and just to keep the longhouse warmer in the cold winters.

These three main crops were called the "Three Sisters" and were usually grown together. Women generally farmed the fields and cooked the meals. They had a number of ways to prepare corn and the other vegetables they grew. The food they ate helped shape the culture by using animal hied as blankets, and clothes. also the hunting and gathering conditions were very goodl.

Even though longhouses were more permanent structures, the village would move every 10 years or so to find new fresh land, more food, and better hunting ground. Up to 60 people would live in a single longhouse, and it wasn't even packed! As long as there was food, no one ever went hungry in a village as food was split equally between the tribe. There was a trail that connected the Five Nations called the Iroquois Trail. The Iroquois Great Council still meets today. The women played a big role in social government, and even chose the representatives that went to meet at the Great Council. Lacrosse was first played and invented by the Iroquois Indians. They have several different names for the game including Teh hon tsi kwaks eks, Guh jee gwah ai, and Ga lahs.

The climate of the Eastern Woodlands is warm and temperate. This affects their clothing because if it was cold weather the Iroquois would wear much heavier clothes, but because the weather is warmer for most of the year their clothing is a lot lighter. So for most of the year a lot of skin is showing, and because of that they get a lot of body tattoos which is a part of their culture.

The Iroquois also had a set of laws that were followed by the tribes. However the Iroquois relocated every 10 years, and had to start over.

Since they were near water the ground was very fertile so they could farm for food. However most of the men went out hunting for food. The Iroquois believed in the "Great Spirit" who they believed created all humans animals and things, and this was why they settled in the forests because they leaved the life was strong there.

In order to fine peace and harmony the Iroquois had some problems they had to deal with. First European settlers attacked them, gave them blankets with small pox (a disease) and they eventually took their land. This same thing happened to them again with the pilgrims. Also when they relocated (they relocated every 10 years) it was hard to transport everyone and everything that was with them. They also has to be careful of outsiders because their hair was very valuable back then and people would go through the long painful process of scalping them for their hair (cutting of the first layer of their skin for their hair)!
