- The boys come together before their inevitable split.
- How does chaos play into their situation? 
- The boys seem very confident that they will be rescued.
- The boys truly believe that making a law saying only the person with the conch can talk will be successful.
- Are the boys' senses of hope, comfort, security, and freedom false?
- Piggy is disregarded; the boy that asks about the 'beastie' is also ignored.
- Are the boys' ignorance ultimately going to lead to their demise?  

Conclusion/Final Thought
The boys aren't concerned at all with the state they are in. They are completely content with their situation, only thinking about good scenarios. What they fail to consider is how long they may be on the island, and perhaps they aren't alone.

-Piggy's intelligence is overlooked. The boys also take him for granted, using his glasses to start a fire and speaking over him even when he is in possession of the conch. However, Piggy finally makes a point that the boys listen to: they haven't been keeping up with everyone. Their idea of a utopia is not so easy to turn into a reality after all.

The boys finally realize and acknowledge the possibility that their sense of freedom and hope may be false... Is there hope? Are they free? - Jack fails to kill the pig again, "Next time." Doesn't he say this the first time?
- Order is not as easy to keep as they initially expected. Their realization that nothing is as perfect as it once seemed starts to set in. Is this the reason that the boys start to rebel and disregard the rules? 
- What's up with Simon?
- The boys, especially Jack, are confident that he knows the entire island, yet they continue to discover new places. Could there really be a place where a beast could hide? Is there even a beast? 

Conclusion/Final Thought
Disobedience never has a good outcome. The boys are starting to think the rules are unnecessary. What will the outcome be?

The boys' lack of effort to preserve the fire has led them to stay another night in the mysterious island. - Simon suggests that there is no beast, just the boys. Is he right?
- The boys are starting to abandon the rules and seem to be straying farther and farther from civilization. The effects of being on the island are starting to make them less orderly and more primitive. 
- Percival says that he thinks the beast comes out of the water. The other boys start to muse on what the beast could be and where it could be hiding. According to their conclusions, the beast may even be a ghost.

Fear is starting to take over the boys' minds. Is their sense of humanity finally starting to fade away?

- Sam and Eric go back to the others after tending to the fire and explain how they saw the beast as they exaggerate the appearance of it. We know that what they saw was actually a person in a parachute. Are their imaginations betraying them because of their fear? What does this mean regarding Percival's description?

The boys are young. They may just be afraid of the dark.

- When Jack, Roger and Ralph go to search for the beast, they find it sitting at the top of the mountain beside a pile of ashes where the fire used to be. However, it is described differently than what the other boys have described the beast as. Could it just be a figment of their imagination? Or did they truly find the beast?

- Jack decides to split from the group and make his own 'tribe.' Their first action was to hunt. The animalistic personalities are starting to become very evident in Jack and his tribe.
- Ralph and Piggy stay on the beach to try and maintain civilization. Piggy tries to keep Ralph optimistic and faithful in the authority of the conch. Regardless of their efforts, the other boys keep going to Jack's group for meat and for fun. Jack and his savages steal fire from Ralph and Piggy, just as they are trying to steal their humanity.

Civilization is nearly nonexistent now that Jack has new pride and authority. How far will this go? - Piggy and Ralph even join in on the killing of "the beast." All humanity is now lost.

- After the conch shell is shattered, Ralph is left with no authority, no voice. After Piggy is killed and Sam and Eric are taken hostage, Ralph is also left with no friends and no allies.

Conclusion/Final Thought
Ralph's hope of rescue and escape is virtually gone. - Ralph hides to try and prolong his fate. He has become prey, the savages are the predators. There doesn't seem to be any humanity left in Jack or any of the other savages. Even Ralph's instincts are as a pig's, weighing the options between hiding, crawling up a tree, or trying to break the hunters' line. There doesn't seem to be any humanity left on the island at all.
- An officer finds Ralph and the others on the beach. He says that he saw their fire. He asks if they had been having a war. 

Conclusion/Final Thought
The boys were ultimately rescued by the very thing that Ralph and Piggy had said they needed from the very beginning: fire. The actions of the boys on the island makes human nature seem like an oxymoron.
