Both Walter's and Tom's life were destroyed by taboos. Both Walter and Tom were respected in their communities. Walter was the American dream who worked hard and Tom was respected in the church. They couldn't get social justice because when a black man and a white woman are in a relationship the black man is in the wrong. This makes society view them as monsters who are in the wrong. In effect, they can't win true judicial justice when they haven't achieved social justice and respect.

When people of color were brought into the court system against white people, the jury and society were instantly against them. Tom was a nice man who was the type of person to help someone everyday just because they seemed like they needed assistance, yet the public and court was extremely biased against him. This happened again when Walter was brought to testify, he was previously viewed as a respectable man on account of his successful business, one who would even be allowed to bend most rules. Despite this, he was instantly shunned and judged by the people of his town as he was seen as committing something evil and wrong by being black with someone who is white. This possibly happens because the white people reacted out of fear. They saw the power that they held and they didn't want to use it so whenever there was a chance of equality being normalized, they reacted aggressively.

Walter was falsely accused as a drug dealer and put into jail. He talks about how he was just kinda put into jail and is still waiting for people to see the facts. This shows how the justice system is quick to judge against someone before all the facts are considered. This then leads to the persons reputation being completely slandered due to being judged quick without looking at the facts. Atticus in TKM was stating facts to support Tom but the jury seamed to ignore the facts over Mayellas view.
