It offers a triple threat. You can see it coming from a long way off. It has a steep ascent and descent. And it rises frighteningly high over water. These are the things gephyrophobics ( fear of bridges and tunnels) most dread.

It was the first fixed crossing of the East River. The bottom center of the bridge opens up and allows ships and boats to pass by. There is two walkways that are horizontal at the top part of the bridge. It is made of stainless steel double helix. Designed to shade visitors from the sun and  provide shelter from the rain from Singapore's tropical climate. At night, a white light illuminates a path for pedestrian and two paired of colored letters C&G and A&T become the focal point.

The original bridge opened in 1954, it was built by Virginia Bridge Company. A second bridge was built in 1969, it collapsed in 1980. The original bridge was then demolish and plans to start the new bridge started in 1983.

The project's total cost was $182 million. The signature arch is 40 stories high provides the central support for the bridge. After its opening in 2012, the bridge was awarded an Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award from the Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
