One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by: Ken Kesey

A major theme in this book is the treatment of mental health patients. Authority figures were the ones to decided who was mentally ill. Several characters in the novel choice to display themselves as "crazy" rather then going to jail for their crimes. During the time period of the book patients were treated very poorly and incorrect medical treatments were used. Mental illness intimidated people in the everyday world. Throughout the book there are several examples "a thin line" between normal and abnormal activity. The caregivers seem as crazy as the patients making it hard to determine who is really in charge. in the book characters exhibit sane actions that contrast with the insane actions of the institution. Kesey's purpose of this novel is to draw attention to mental illness. His writing assists in eliminating the stigma around mental illness and makes it a topic of discussion. In the time period of the novel mental illness was not valued. Patients were tucked away in hospitals and their care was brutal and inhumane. The treatment was not for their benefit but for the benefit of society, removing them from everyday life. Kesey's desire was to improve the value of mental health in society.

Conformity is key in Huxley's novel about a futuristic utopia. Mental health is not addressed in everyday life due to mental illnesses being defects in their test tubes babies. This makes it impossible for anyone with a mental health problem to get he help that they may need. Citizens in this utopia cannot be outside of their assigned caste and if that were to happen then they would be isolated. The conformity of the society destroys all individuality and provides more aware characters with a feeling of being alone. Huxley is trying to create a perfect society but in his book he does not account for the abnormalities that come with human beings. There was no value of mental health because in Brave New World anything different was rejected and disposed of.

Rocking farther and farther backward against the cabin top, spreading his laugh out across the water—laughing at the girl, the guys, at George, at me sucking my bleeding thumb, at the captain back at the pier and the bicycle rider and the service-station guys and the five thousand houses and the Big Nurse and all of it. Not in the hospital, these, to get fixed, but just to keep them from walking around the streets giving the product a bad name. Chronics are in for good, the staff concedes. Chronics are divided into Walkers like me, can still get around if you keep them fed, and Wheelers and Vegetables. What the Chronics are—or most of us—are machines with flaws inside that can't be repaired, flaws born in, or flaws beat in over so many years of the guy running head-on into solid things that by the time the hospital found him he was bleeding rust in some vacant lot."

Society needs to value mental health more than it does because it affects everyone. Positive mental health will allow for a happier and healthier society. To create a culture that values mental health there must be more awareness. In Brave New World mental health is not addressed making it difficult to value because people in the society don't know anything about it. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest mental health is addressed but only negatively. The novel only shows the evil of mental diseases not the positives of having good mental health in citizens. Today there are actions occurring that are improving the value like Mental Health Month and increased attention on adolescents. With improved techniques, homier facilities, and more awareness mental health will have more of a value in our society.
