Miller was born on February 15, 1782, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He then moved to Low Hampton New York. He served as a lieutenant in the Vermont militia. From 1840 and on Millerism was a national movement. Miller said that Jesus Christ would come again to cleanse and purify earth. He predicted sometime between March 21st 1843-1844 but there was no indecent. He then announced that it would be April 18th but, like the other date, nothing happened. He responded publicly writing “I confess my error, and acknowledge my disappointment; yet I still believe that the day of the Lord is near, even at the door."The final date was set at October 22nd 1844. This date is known as “ The Great Dissapointment”. After that most millerites gave up their belifes.

A man by the name William Miller, figured out the exact time (October 22nd, 1844) that Christ would return and the world would come to an end. When people heard of Miller's prediction they were both fearful of impending doom and excited to see the prediction hold true. People got rid of all there belongs, fled to the hills with only a robe, and even quit their jobs. But the world didn't end, in fact more predictions were made and disappointment only grew. Miller would die in 1848 never seeing the Second Coming of Christ. The most well-known millerites today were a small millerite sect, the Seventh-Day Adventists, who abandoned the idea of the world ending and instead live with the expectation that it will be "right soon."

Miller's legacy includes the Advent Christian Church with 61,000 members, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church with over 19 million members. Both of these have a direct connection with the Millerites and the Great Disappointment of 1844. The millerite religion itself plumished after the great dissapointment.
