In his 2012 essay to people who need to cherish the moments in their life, author Brian Doyle urges people to enjoy every single moment of life. Doyle compares different animals, exemplifies types of hearts, and uses process analysis to explain the lives of the animals. Doyle describes the hearts of organisms in order to emphasize that everyone has a heart but they are used in different ways, yet they all provide life and hold emotions. Doyle speaks to the people in a reflective and informative tone to move the audience to think about their life and cherish every moment.

Ethos- The author appeals to the audiences ethics by providing knowledge of different animals hearts and connecting to the reader by describing relatable situations. "We open windows to each but we live alone in the house of the heart. Perhaps we must. Perhaps we could not bear to be so naked, for fear of a constantly harrowed heart. "(7)
Logos- The author appeals to the audiences logic by providing specific facts about the animals he talks about. " A hummingbird’s heart beats ten times a second."(2) This makes the reader feel more trustworthy of the author.
Pathos- The author appeals to the audiences emotions through invoking nostalgia and sadness." a cat with a broken spine dragging itself into the forest to die,the brush of your mother’s papery ancient hand in the thicket of your hair, the memory of your father’s voice early in the morning echoing from the kitchen where he is making pancakes for his children"(7) The reader through feeling sadness will feel more of impact from the essay.

Brian Doyle uses multiple metaphors throughout his essay to further his comparisons between the different animals and to emphasize how their heart works saying things such as "To drive those metabolisms they have race-car hearts," about the hummingbirds fast metabolisms and "It is a room, with four chambers" to emphasize how big a whale's heart truly is.
Doyle also uses personification when referencing the blue whales saying that "their penetrating moaning cries, their piercing yearning tongue, can be heard underwater for miles and miles." Doyle usage of this is meant to appeal to the readers emotions and show how the heart is also deals with the emotions of creatures.
Doyle also uses anaphora showing how easy it is for a lifetime to end by using how for a hummingbird “ It’s expensive to fly. You burn out. You fry the machine. You melt the engine.“ he explains the short life cycle of the humming bird which alludes to how nobody should take their life for granted and to live life to the fullest since a lifetime can be short.
Doyle also uses parallelism of the word “and” in the end of his paragraph saying “that all hearts finally are bruised and scarred, scored and torn, repaired by time and will, patched by force of character, yet fragile and rickety forevermore, no matter how ferocious the defense and how many bricks you bring to the wall.“ the parallelism emphasizes how every creature's heart will be hurt, either physically or emotionally, and how it is fragile yet strong. He is also convincing the audience to not give up when the heart is hurt because it is strong and will repair overtime.
Lastly Doyle also uses allegory throughout the entirety of the essay using multiple examples of animals such as “Mammals and birds have hearts with four chambers. Reptiles and turtles have hearts with three chambers. Fish have hearts with two chambers. Insects and mollusks have hearts with one chamber.” these examples are used, as well as the humming bird and blue whale, to emphasize the differences between the hearts they hold in a lifetime. He emphasizes these differences to further his message of living a lifetime to the fullest.

The author speaks in a informative and reflective tone. In the beginning of the essay, Doyle speaks in an informative tone by talking about the animals and their different characteristics. He provides facts and scientific support. "Each one visits a thousand flowers a day. They can dive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backwards." (3) The tone intrigues the audience and makes them want to listen to Doyle. At the end of the passage, he shifts to a reflective tone that reflects on the different moments of life. "When young we think there will come one person who will savor and sustain us always; when we are older we know this is the dream of a child, that all hearts finally are bruised and scarred, scored and torn, repaired by time and will, patched by force of character, yet fragile and rickety forevermore, no matter how ferocious the defense and how many bricks you bring to the wall." (7) The tone makes the audience think over their life and all the moments that they need to cherish.
