Chp 1. Why is release something both negative and positive?

In the "The Giver" by Lois Lowry,Jonas lives in a utopia or a perfect world. In this utopia, you can be released which means you must leave and never come back. This sounds like it's always a bad thing but there are negatives and positive to being released. "There were only two occasions of release which were not punishment. Release of the elderly, which was a time of celebration for a life well and full lived; and release of a newchild, which always brought a sense of what-could-we-have-done"(Lowry 9,10). This shows how release could be positive because it either celebrated a life well lived or have people a sense of what they could have done. Release could also obviously be negative because it can be a punishment for breaking the rules. When you get released, you cant come back again. This differs from our world because you can’t just get kicked out. However, here in America, you can get banned from certain places but, from my knowledge, you can't get banned from a state or the country (unless you get deported). So, release can be negative and positive because it can be a punishment or a celebration and is different from the place we live in.

Chp 3- Apple

In the book if you dont follow the rules you get taken out of the community, released, and never able to come back. An apple can connect and can symbolism release in the book. An apple is sweet, people eat an apple for their self, not to please other people. But, what they dont eat is the core, they throw it away because of the bad taste that they dont want. This can relate to the book because when something in the community sees a good person and follows the rules, they stay and are welcomed in the community. But, when they see someone that doesnt follow the rules and is not obeying what is asked for they get released (thrown away just like the core of the apple). The good people stay (the yummy apple) the people that disobey and break rules get released (like the core of the apple).

In the book there are lots of things that are forbidden. But just in this chapter one main thing it talks about is jonas's dream about affection and pleasurable thought. I know that is not allowed to have thoughts like that because his mom makes him take a pill that makes that go away. She said that everyone takes it in this friend group, males and soon females too.

THE RECEIVERS HOUSE

The receiver's house different from the other houses in the community because it was more luxurious and fancy. It also had more room and privacy. For example for privacy they had locks on the doors which normal houses on the community does not. Also, for example all the tables in the givers house are more fancy and are curved and the ones in the normal houses are not as fancy and straight. The reason for these differences are because the giver and receiver need their privacy in order to do their job. With locks on the doors it will prevent unknown people accidently walking in while they are working.

TRANSMITTING MEMORIES

The actual process of transmitting memories is by the giver instructs Jonas to take off his tunic and lie face-down on the bed. Then he goes to the speaker, which is just like the speaker that transmits announcements in every house, and turns it off, something that no one else in the community can do. He places his hands on Jonas’s back, and Jonas begins to feel whatever memory is being transmitted. The first memory Jonas receives is the memory of snow.

On page 98, Jonas says, “I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now.” This means that jonas thinks that there was no past generations before the people that are already alive. As the giver explains to him where the memories come from generation back. He didnt think there was back then and the past. He thought it was only people alive and no one behind them in the past years. Some people can think this is a good way to live because when you just think about the future and the present you will never fall back in the past and the future is coming and not done but the past is done so thats why.

Jonas is surprised when The Giver turns the speaker off and locks the door because before being the reciever he didn't have the authority to do anything of that sort and was just mind blown that he can now do that was just confused that he CAN do it. Also, because they didn't allow him to do it back then and now with the job he has it helps with privacy. I can inference about the privacy of other people in this community that they don't have a lot because since the receivers can have locks and the normal people in the community does not. That shows that they have less privacy then Jonas and the giver.

Jonas receives THREE memories in Chapter 11. The things he has never experienced in those memories that he has now. For snow he experiences downhill, runner, and sledding. This isn't seen in the community because they have climate control so that means they don't have snow. The second memory is sunshine. In this memory he is just laying/sitting there with the sun shining down on him as he feels the earth throughout his body. This is not seen in his community because they don't have the sun. The third memory is the sunburn. In this moment he first persons the sunshine again but with a slight burning sensation. Again, they cant experience this because there's no sun and you need sun to get sunburn

The title of "The Giver" tells the reader that it can be about someone perhaps giving something to someone and once you read the book you find out tis the memories that are being given. Also you can see a man in the cover so maybe that tells the reader that since there's a man that many is the person that gives things (Which he is). This title is significant because someone can easily influenced the plot of the book by looking at the title/cover of the book.
