Basil "Manenberg" Coetzee was a South African saxophonist who lived from 1944 to 1998. He was known for his deep cultural blends with jazz. He held true to his cultural roots while gaining popularity. South Africa has been believed to be a home for people for over 100.000 years. Throughout these 100.000 years a lot has happened they have been hunters, evolved into farmers, been enslaved, broken free of their enslaved years and evolved into the beautiful country it is nowadays.

In South Africa you have many different kinds of music. Aldophone Sax, a Belgian instrument designer, invented the saxophone in 1846. this version was one of the many versions however. Sir Sax "claimed"the design for the first 15 years after it was invented but after that people like the French manufacturer who extended the belly and added an extra note, like many more did after him.  It was just in 1914 when the saxophone entered the worl of jazz.

the sound and looks:
The saxophone is made from brass but is being seen as a woodwind instruments because it sounds more like and woodwind instrument. It looks like a bended tube with a single reed mouthpiece and there are holes in the instrument that are being close by a system of key mechanisms making the tone higher or lower. 

The function:
The saxophone is used as a melody instrument or soloing. In rock and roll or pop music it is sometimes use as a member in the horn section. it is also used in classical music, in millitary bands, marching bands and also in jazz. in jazz the saxophone is a very popular instrument.
