FIRST WEEK: Alva, Adeela, Patricia and Natacha: the most advanced groups are the largest, about 14 people, all above B2+ level if previous years' experience holds true. The obligation is to cover the broad outlines of the course (see document here) but at this level a) play with them and b) ask them to prepare the work themselves (presentations, 'podcasts', mini-lessons, role plays, recording videos - you know). As soon as I have the results of their tests, I will make the groups.

NB ON THURSDAY or the nearest day, we eat with the classes - there will be a catered spread. The other days we have access to the JJ (Jean Jaures) canteen. You can also bring a lunch but I prefer if we eat together.

We are all teaching the same course to successive groups, with slight variations. This means we have the opportunity to save on prep work by combining resources - hence this page. If you are teaching half a week, please cooperate (through me; probably) with your partner to avoid duplication of some exercises and to tell them who is who.

Apology: The free photocopying at JJ is promised but never assured. Better to come prepared. Feel free to pop in to the office and do whatever you need. If you can't come in, send me files. You should by then have received a code for our photocopiers. At JJ there is reseau but not wifi, and there is cable access in each class to the internet. So you can either use the cable or use your hotspot. Or a student's hotspot, I suppose.

Step 1.

During the class, each group makes a list of vocabulary from the day and submits it to the teacher. I use Quizlet for this because it will combine lists easily. Teacher combines the lists and culls for quality and quantity - quality being what you want them to learn, quantity being about 5 words per hour of class.

Step 2.

For homework, ask the class to learn  everything on your list.

Step 3.

Next day, if possible, teacher circles the vocab (keep using it) to reinforce learning.

Step 4.

20 mins. At the end of the class, storytelling activity. Each group chooses a speaker. In five minutest, the speaker invents an off-the-cuff story which must use 20 of the terms on the list. The listeners have to spot the terms as they are used.  Their score is how many of the 20 they tap for. False taps may be penalised.

Marking: Speaker gets an automatic 10 plus half of the score of the group. Group scores by recognising the terms in the story and tapping the table - everyone in the group gets the one score. Someone from another group monitors the correct taps and tells the teacher the score. Teacher may also do marking. 

While teachers are surrounded by hundreds of students every day, it's easy to go a whole week without talking to another professional. When I started dedicating time to having lunch with others, stopping by the staff office, or even just sitting with someone else during my planning period, my mental health and well-being saw a huge improvement. ''

Testing is used as a teaching method during the course

Pendant la formation le formateur évalue en continu et valide la progression, soit en termes de niveau (selon le CECRL) soit en termes d’acquis. L’apprenant est évalué par le biais de mises en situation, d’exercices pratiques et d’échanges.

Le formateur complete une grill de participation en classe pour chaque étudiant.

At the end of the course the student's level is measured again. You dill in the questions and Oscar generates the Attestation des Acquis.

• En fin de formation le formateur complète pour chaque stagiaire une attestation des acquis et le degré d’atteint des objectifs du programme (sur Oscar).

• En fin de formation le formateur fera un test de niveau écrite ainsi qu'un test de niveau orale, basé sur les themes du cours

Judgment is what you have, and what you show, after asking questions and talking with others.

On Day 1, morning: Get Ss to self-assess their written level (form supplied if you want), then also write a couple of paragraphs. Do you agree with their self-assessment? Enter your assessment into their individual files on Oscar.

Day 1 afternoon to Day 4: Have fun within the bounds of the 'Contenu De La Formation' and answering their actual needs. The enthusiasm and confidence you can instil now, is all they have to get them to B2 level in a few short months.

On Day 4 (morning, not afternoon, if you want my advice): Test written and oral work again. Give each Student a five-minute one-one-one if you can for the oral test. Write the results into Oscar. It is unlikely any will have advanced more than half a level, but a clear idea of their capacities will be helpful to them. In the supplied excel document (to come) give them a mark for participation (this is actually used, it's not just a gesture) that we supply afterward to Jean Jaures.
