I decided to chose old vs new because i found more ideas from this theme than any other when doing my mind-map and mood board. I was particularly fascinated with the old trends in general and how they are different now- but also how old trends have influenced new trends? By aesthetics and trends this applies to fashion trends, photography trends (e.g. photography for magazines, posters), architectural trends (how exterior and interior design aesthetics have changed), and old art vs new art. This is my surface visuals and this will develop as i go- however i have a brief idea in my project proposal and response to the answer below "what do you want your work to be about?".

Firstly, in order to fully understand the old aesthetic i had to research it- i chose to research the 50's- from this research i realised they were very into vivid colours. I saw this through the fashion, art and room decor as pictured below.
The fashion for women were often big round dresses with stockings. Alot of these dresses were bright colours and pattered- often polka dots.
The interior design layout has definitely changed now, however back then bright colours were also in trend. Alot of the houses had wooden panelling.

Back in the 50's, alot of the art, photography and fashion were housewives; this is how women were often seen as back then. Gender roles often consisted of women being housewives whilst men were head of the house and were the income providers. Women were often represented in the media as slaves to men, which can be seen through the overly- sexualised images of them solely to please men. They were typically seen as failures to men who couldn't earn money, and their hard work as a housewife was never appreciated. They were seen as stupid, as seen on the image below of a women opening a ketchup bottle with the caption "you mean a women can open it?".

New aesthetic research

Nowadays, a lot of the modern designs are a lot more simplistic, cleaner and sleek. This is called minimalist aesthetic- this lifestyle is supposed to feel like a breath of fresh air, and a calming atmosphere.
Fashion can alternate from many different styles in 2021, as people are free to express themselves. However, i wanted to delve into the simplistic, neutral colours theme. This style is very popular at the retail place i work, Zara.
Interior design is very modernised, but usually sticks to a neutral colour scheme, with hints of colour. This means that the design is not completely washed out, but also not overpowered with colour.
Photography now tries to focus more on empowering insecurities rather than poke fun- through trying to capture the beautiful side to it. Insecurities may include skin colour, weight, gender, acne etc.
Art can vary a lot, however the newer styles are a lot more minimalist such as line art, and militaristic digital art. Below i have included secondary images to represent this, but also my own primary images.

I will link them by:
-contrasting the two artists and their messages.
-talking about the similarities between the two.
- for some art i will mix the two old and new experiments together- so that they are connected as one. I will do this by taking ideas from the old experiment (eg colour scheme, style, technique) and mixing with a new experiment to create one piece.
I will also try to research artists who experiment with both old and new.

Erwin Blumenfeld was a photographer who was born in 1897 and died in 1969, from Berlin, who emigrated to the United States, where he became a fashion photographer, working for Harper's Bazaar, Life and Vogue. His wok was particularly best known from the 1940s and 1950's, however i want to particularly look at his work from the 1950's.
I chose Erwin Blumenfeld to study because he fits into my old aesthetic for fashion in the 1950's, this is relevant for the "old" side of my topic.

This is an image by Erwin Blumenfeld of Evelyn Tripp from April 1st 1953, in the year when Queen Elizabeth II was a year into her reign, Audrey Hepburn would soon star, and Yves Saint Laurent was submitting sketches to Christian Dior in the hopes he might land a place in the Parisian atelier.
I believe this photography symbolises a day in the office, through the use of telephones, which was one of the only jobs women in the 50's were aloud. This photo shows the women looking very positive, which could be seen as propaganda towards office work presenting the women as happy with what she's doing, meanwhile many women were overworked, underpaid and bored.

I finally used the app picsart to put the Vogue text on top.
I feel as though this photo also mixes in well with the new fashion trends which i researched last week, so this experiment links to both old and new- it has an old aesthetic, filter etc but the fashion is modern.
I particularly liked the smooth texture of the piece, creating the softness that the colours bring too. I feel like this creates a calming fresh mood.
However, i feel as though i could've gotten the 50's fashion more on point than i did, it has very modern fashion trends- this would've made the piece link even more to my research. Next time i will consider finding or creating older styles of fashion. However, i feel this could also be seen as a positive as i have been able to incorporate my two categories of my theme into one experiment- old and new.
From this, i believe i can find a modern artist and respond to that, and then combine them both together and seeing what sort of image i can come out with and wether i like it or not. I am thinking of experimenting with acrylics as this is something i am not confident with and want to improve on.

Overall, I like this piece because i don't tend to be good at acrylic so i feel this is good for me.
I like the composition of the piece, how i am positioned however i could've improved the face proportions, i think the chin is too large and the lips are too small. I will know to improve that the next time i create a portrait. I like the bold vogue title, the dark title mixed with the neutral tones of the portrait, as it creates a dramatic effect.
However, i believe the face could've been improved by fixing the proportions. To do this, i will fix the shape before painting to prevent this from happening again. The tones could have aswell. The tones were too grey toned and i wish i had warmed it up now. Next time i will include a red into my skin tone mixture.
From here, i would love to study modern vogue covers and compare the two, as the new part of my old and new topic.
From there i want to explore the fashion more. I am going to watch The Queen's Gambit to get 50's fashion inspiration.

I particularly loved this photo he produced of Beyonce with flowers in her hair for the Vogue September 2018 issue. I loved this because of the colour of the flowers, i think the colour scheme makes a youthful and pure feel, as white represents pureness but the flowers give a feel of freshness.
I also love the how the title is beige from its typical black, which reignites the pure feeling of calmness instead of the striking black. However, this therefore takes the attention away from the title which could be seen as a negative

From the 1950's Vogue issues to now, there are many differences. Beauty standards were very different, which is evident in this image. In comparison to Erwin Blumenfeild, his artwork particularly photographed white females wearing modest clothing. Whereas Tyler Mitchell has captured things that would've been frowned upon back in the 1950's. This includes black models (as seen on Beoynce's picture) and men wearing dresses (as seen on Harry Style's picture). I believe this can be seen as very powerful to show how the media can influence what should be normalised in modern society. Whereas in the 1950's, views were still very racist, homophobic and misogynistic.

However, as a similarity i will say that society have still not fully accepted these subjects and racism, sexism etc is still very much a problem.
Image-wise, trend's have changed. Blumenfeild has captured more bright colours, skin was often paler and the style was very modest.
Mitchell however captures modern trends, which has more neutral toned down colours, this is seen as more peaceful and minimalist.

The Queen's Gambit is a 2020 American coming of age period drama based on Walter Tevis's novel in 1983, which was based between 1958-1968, so the fashion styles are very much dated to around this time.

From looking at the outfits worn in this series, I have picked up that alot of 50's fashion consisted of very feminine outfits, usually dresses or skirts. Also the colours are varied, but always muted. For example sage green, mustard yellow, coral are all muted versions of primary colours. I think this brings a gloomy mood; all the colours seem a bit of a duller version to colours. Nevertheless, i love how the outfits are feminine as they fit well and tailor to women curves. However, this may have been a subtle way to show this through the very mysogynistic times of the 50's. I feel as though alot of these outfits are similar to the Coco Chanel aesthetic with the black border, so they may have incorporated some 1920's fashion.
This research is relevant to my topic because it helps me get some more ideas of the fashion i am referring to.
Eventually i will be studying the hidden inferrences and messages between womens fashion in the 1950s vs now, however i want to get an idea of the fashion before i study deeper into that.
From here, im going to create a response to this, then, i'm going to study a modern fashion, and create responses experimenting with materials. To keep this research relevant, i am going to link The Queen's Gambit fashion, ethier by combining the responses or by comparing and contrasting.

The 1950's Vogue covers also helped pick these outfits.
I felt this was relevant to do because it helps me use my iniative to create 50's fashion.

The first outfit i decided to use some colour because Alice still wears alot of muted colours and polo shirts. I think the mood is very joyful and is a youthful colour scheme.

I chose to use houndstooth pattern for one as this was very popular in The Queen's Gambit, mostly worn by the character Alice. I feel the second outfit is a bit gloomy colour wise, but professional, with a printed texture.

I am glad i found this app as i believe it will help create outfits since i am studying alot of fashion.

This image includes a dark tone for the background which contrasts the bright colours on the women. I love the use of this, because it makes the women stand out more. I also think the composition of the women being central of the image is effective, making her the centre piece and main focus. It has a calm mood, the expression of the women creates this.
If i could improve anything i would add shadows to the face to add definition and detail.

This image brings a lively and thought provoking mood. I particularly like the opaque colour array and the soft line, which really compliments the women's curves. I also like the smooth, but glossy texture on the boots and hat. However if i had done this i would've ethier changed the background colour or the colour of the overshirt, as they are very similar, meaning it is difficult to identify the shirt. a darker colour would've been a great use of contrast.

Overall there is one questions- did these empower women, or sexualise them? Typically in the 50's, it was a very sexist era, and these types of art were enjoyed by a male audience. Although it showed the beauty of women nudity, and encouraging women to stop following society standards of staying "modest", it also created an unreliastic body standard for women, which probably had a contribution to the increase in body image disorders today.

This research was relevant in my project to go into more depth than just the fashion. It was still relevant, as this artist shows nudity through the choice of fashion.
From here, I am going to create a response to this piece. I am going to change my previous art add what i think would be different if it were the 1950's.

I wanted to research a modern artist as part of my new part of my topic. I love Sarah-Jane Spicer's work, or @art.bysj on instagram. She is a small artist via instagram who paints nude bodies.
I chose to study Spicer because i wanted to compare 1950's art and portrayal in comparison to now- are women more empowered by public nudity or sexualised?
This is still relevant research as last time i researched into the promiscuity shown through the 1950's art. I previously studied how women were perceived through the fashion and now i have narrowed it to how women are perceived through art and photography back the the 1950's and contrast to now and the changes.

I particularly like this piece of art for the choice of colours. They are bright, and i love the composition of the painting. It has a energetic mood, with all the colours and brush strokes going on. It has smooth lines with a bit of variation, from the different strokes and directions. The mark making is very layered to add definition. I think this adds to the shadows and highlights

This has a very tranquil mood, due to the colours being very neutral and calming. It has lights tones with hints of middle and dark tones, this adds to the definition to outline certain main areas and shadows. It has a scraped and brushed texture, with the unblended random colours I love this style and also the splattered mark making adds to the detail of the piece

Overall, i was very happy with the outcome of this piece and there are a few reasons why:
-i like the neutral colour scheme, it creates a pure and calm mood
-i like the shape of the piece, i feel the composition fits well
- i like the mark making of the brush strokes and the splatter that brings a rougher unblended texture
however, i dislike some features:
- i dislike the thickness of the dark outline, this could be fixed next time by using a smaller paint brush
- i wish i had done the skin colour less yellow toned to make it seem more real to actual skin colour, this can be improved next time by adding violet paint to neutralise the yellow tone.
-finally, i could have blended the colours more and will do this next time by working at a small part at a time so i have time to blend it before it dries.

In terms of the artwork that you're generating from these ideas, I like that you're exploring both traditional and digital techniques, and that you're recording the development of your work through several linked stages - well done.
To make this even better, I think you need more quick, experimental sketches and drawings, rather than a few very "worked on" paintings. I like how your later acrylic paintings of nudes has become much looser and more expressive - I think that's more interesting then the very graphic look of the "Vogue" cover piece".
Well done for working from primary photos you had taken of yourself - that's a good step. Try this process again, but this time take a lot more different angles and poses, so you can choose the best composition.
Plan how the outfit and photo composition can be empowering.

Then do a series of 5-10 quick sketches, (10-30 mins), experimenting with different photos to see how they translate into drawings, then take the best of those and experiment with different approaches to developing these creatively to show your intentions visually. Don't spend more than hour on any of the developments - at this stage we want more, quick visual ideas, to help you choose what you want to refine later.

How is modern nudity perceived?

These articles helped gather my information:
https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2399807/paulina-porizkova-naked-photo-instagram/

https://www.retailgazette.co.uk/blog/2020/10/missguided-however-you-nude-empowerment-body-diversity-positive-inclusive/

From my research from articles and my own knowledge, times have changed a lot. Mostly, nudity is very much realistic in 2021. Instead of women showing off airbrushed, photoshopped photos, the intent is different than the 1950's- nudity is usually to empower and normalise insecurities. For example, the missguided article shows off women with stretch marks, darker complexion, bigger sizes- all of which were shamed in the 1950's. Nowadays, alot of the target audience for these nude models is aimed at women and impressionable young girls, to show that these insecurities are normal. However, this is not just the case. There are two sides to women nudity, and as much as there is a side to please women insecurities, there is also a side that is to please men. Although, this isn't always seen on a bad light as much as it was in the 1950's. As much as it still creates an unrealistic standard of bodies that many women won't be able to live up to, and creates a standard for some men, it also creates many jobs for women, which many women only take on if they are fully comfortable and feel empowered by nudity, unlike the 50's, when women's feeling were not typically taken into account, as the government system didn't help out much with lower class females and this was their only hope regardless if they were comfortable or not.

In conclusion, modern nudity still needs improvement and it seems as though it has an even brighter future, however much has changed from the 1950's and it is used as a form of empowerment and embracing insecurities.

This made the piece more defined and more put together and neat.
-i also made the lines closer to the shade i filled it in more so it blended a bit more and wasn't so much of a contrast, to make it appear more muted.
-Finally, i added crease marks, tones all to define the piece more. This helped the proportions also, as it seemed more accurate to my body once definition was added, it wasn't just a straight body, it had a curve which also adds to the realism.
Overall i think the improvements made big differences. I am going to focus on creating a new response and combining these together.

This piece was to refer back to "new" nudity. I am going to write a final context and hidden message paragraph on week 9, and this will explain how this piece of art is relevant to new nudity.
I referred back to sarah jane spicers artwork to help inspire this piece, as she is one of my favourite artists i researched.
My intention is to combine this art and the work above into one piece. This will help my direction for my final piece as i am going to have to combine old and new together for my final piece.
I am happy with the outcome and i love the abstract look. The hint of nuetral colours is very relevant to the minimilist aesthetic i studied in on week 2.

Final context and hidden message for final piece

Before i go into deciding and experimenting for my final piece, i thought i would give a final description of what the message i want to be behind my final piece and context.
Throughout my project, i have alternated from old to new. Towards the end, i looked into how nudity was percieved in old and new.
I established that nudity is seen as a power move, to show imperfections, and is mainly targetted towards women with insecurities from what they see via social media. Essentially, nowadays we are working hard to destroy the perfect body image that we created through social media and media outlets like playboy, pornographic content and photoshopped photos.

However, although social media was not around in the 50's, the idea of nudity was shamed upon, and if it were flaunted, it was purely just for men satisfaction. In addition to this, Playboy magazines were created in the 1950's, along with pornographic films. However, this was a time period where sexism and misogyny was at its peak, and women nudity was only beneficial to objectify women. Regular, non sex worker women were still expected to cover up in public and were shamed upon.
This is why whenever i have referred back to a 50's artist or my own 50's art, they have been covered in some way, and always more covered than my 2010's+ art. I want to show the message through my art that nudity should be shown for empowerment and to be realistic with imperfections, rather than to please one gender and one gender only. I am going to do this by combining my "old" and "new" artwork, and contrasting the perceptions then vs now.

I felt it showed the message that not every body is perfect in today’s society and the abstract art shows that through the curvy lines and the shape.
I also want to incorporate the ‘old’ and I felt Gil Elvgrin work could incorporate greatly here, I am thinking of incorporating one of his elements of a piece for example a piece of clothing he used. I’m going to try and alternate two initial designs and develop them and chose my favourite. If I don’t like ether I will think of a new idea.

I dislike this piece, i feel its very messy. However, i am glad i still experimented with it to know what materials to use.
FINAL PIECE DECISION:
I have decided my favourite material was digital art. It looked the cleanest and i am the most confident with it.
I am going to keep the same idea however spend more time on it, make it more defined and think about blending the colourful body and graphite together so it isn't as harsh. I will decide if this looks better through my progress photos.

I also like the composition of the piece in the middle, and how the background is quite bare, is it doesn't take away any attention from the women, who is the centre piece of the drawing.
However, if i were to critique anything, it would be the colour of the background, I feel a black would've fitted better, as the red blends in with the colours a bit too much making it not stand out as much as it could.

As well as celebrating the 50 year anniversary of gaining the rights to vote, the 1970's protests also aimed to reach the same pay as men, reduce academic restrictions for women, and have access to credit cards and owning a home wthout a husband in many states.
In 1970's, Havard and many other higher education didnt accept women. Money still was 63p compared to every pound of a man per hour.
They organised a strike, during rush hour, sponsored by feminist organisation NOW, in which 50,000 gathered in New York City. Through the 70's, women working increased by 42 percent, and much of the increase was in what traditionally was considered "men's" work and professional work.

The me too movement was created on My Space by Tarana Burke to break their silence on sexual assault. The purpose was to empower women with empathy, and show survivors how many people have gone through it, so they don't feel as isolated. Since this movement, many countries have discussed about their culture norms and wether they are appropriate. In addition to this, not only has it became an outlet for women to speak up, but also taught for children, and men.

I think the red is really striking and emphasises the body even more.
I think this is a big contrast to Sarah-Jane Spicer, as it is alot more of an unnatural shape, but follows the same idea as Helena Wierzbicki, of the unrealistic body, which almost infers that bodies were not created to be perfect.

To improve this even more, i believe another layer of paint could've fixed it more, as it is still a bit patchy. I think i can solve this by using another material, and seeing if the problem improves.

In conclusion, I am happy with this piece. I like the abstract colours, and the detail on the face, it adds more definition and makes it more realistic.
To improve I could have blended the hair highlights more, however I struggled in this area because the software I used is more for abstract digital art and vectors, so blending isn’t an option on it. I worked around it by lowering the opacity every layer and doing strokes. However, I feel it is still harsh. This could’ve been improved by adding more strokes and layers.

The hidden meaning behind this piece is the 50’s nudity opinions compared to modern nudity opinions. In the face, you can see it is black and white, this represents how society was towards nudity. It was very black and white, ethier you had a perfect body and flaunted it to men or you didn’t and you hid it. The body section represents modern opinions, how nudity is now mainly for women to see that everyone is imperfect and we flaunt imperfections, the colours and the different shapes represents flaunting your curves, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and other imperfections.
The colour peeing into the black and white face represents the movements society were doing to get to the place we are now. I also added the Vogue title, as the model seems very vogue-like, and vogue was one of the influences towards society today when it comes to female perspectives.

It would show some covers that would've been controversial for its time (etc women in bikinis, promiscuity, unusual trends) which normalised it alot more for the time period.

a. Yes, i have included my own images and referred from my artists that I've researched. I included my own images in my vogue response, on week 3, my candle on week 5, on week 2 in my aesthetic research, and week 8 on my experiment.
I have also responded to all my artists i researched, and used their art as reference. Although, there was a slight barrier from using primary images, because i studied female nudity, and that would be inappropriate.
b. I have mixed two artists styles a few times, this can be seen when i incorporated the vogue painting and added Gil Elvgrin touches to it. Another example of this is when i took my Helena Wierzbicki response but used the body of Sarah Jane Spicer's paintings.
However, i used my own style by using materials i am confident in using, and incorporated the graphic and abstract touch that is my art style.
