The song is about loving someone and wanting their attention and not stopping until you get it. During an interview, Gaga also said it was about wanting love and fame all at the same time. In the video, Gaga is in sync with the dancers, and during other parts, they are following her around. Most famous people fit into this mold if they are going to make it, which is brought to light as she is in sync with them. Also, the dancers act as paparazzi following her around. “I will follow you until you love me.” Another lyric that shows the meaning of the song, is “I’ll be your girl backstage at your show.” This reveals wanting to be in love, another meaning of the song revealed by Gaga. In the video, she runs around the stage followed by the dancers, like paparazzi, and flashing lights around her, like camera flashes. I think throughout the video she is slowly dying, as she keeps up with fame. Growing more and more tired as she deals with the pressure around her. At the end of the video, she is injured and is bleeding out and falls to the ground. The pressure of fame and stress, I think, was too much and was killing her, but as she kept an image, no one noticed.

According to multiple interviews, she says the song is about working, and loving what she does, but also wanting to go out and party, and overall, be herself. She has this image that has been upheld for her entire career, and she has to stick to it. Scandalous clothes, her high pitched voice, and dancing on stage. All shown in her live performance. Personally, I think the song is about her being a slave for her record label. A slave for her career. The intro to the song says “I need to do what I feel like doing, So let me go, just listen.” That seems like a plea to whoever saying please let me go. Let me be free. At the same time she does love her career and the opportunities she has had. “I’m a slave for you, I won’t deny it, I’m not trying to hide it.” Just like in the other video, she is in sync with her dancers. Obviously this is a common thing in performances, but I still think it conveys the idea of  “I have to fit this mold. Be like everyone else, if I want to make it.”

Multiple members had jobs as screenwriters in Hollywood, making it extremely difficult after the fact, for anyone to get that job after the 50s, according to page 424. As a screenwriters were able to subtley or not subtley about the communist party in a good way. In attempt to persude people to join their party. While members of HUAC gave reasons for their actions, I don't entirely think that justifies what they did. You can explain why you did something but that doesn't mean you had a good reason. You need a valid reason to do something. Again on page 424, the reading says that gernally writers are good at their job, they get get every bit and go into every detail. Rock and roll was different because it relfected the views and beliefs of minorties, such as the poor and people of color. Television never touched on social problems or even the existance of people of color, as rock and roll did.
2. With the help of rock and roll, ideas, values, and idiums from people of color were beign expressed and brought to light. It got white teens listening to black singers and music.
3. Rock and roll helped break down morility amungst teenagers, because it helped normalise sexuality. This was a normal thing for them to be feeling and it was okay to (safely) expirence life and stop living in a small bubble.
4. Rebel with a cause and rock and roll are similar, because it is helping teens get out of their confort zones in some ways. It expresses feelings going on inside their heads that they weren't allowed to really express. It allowed them to put a name to the feelings and normalize them. Whatever they were feeling was real and was valid. For the first time, people were speaking how life wasn't as perfect as thought to be. Teenagers are real people, and they had feelings. Just like adults they felt, hurt, and loved. I think the validation for that is so important as it is shown in the music and movies. It wasn't talked about before and there is no worse feeling than being told you cant feel something, or what you're feeling is wrong, or you aren't allowed to feel. Everyone knows how awful it is to be invalidated, or have your opinion or feelings invalidated. It's up to the viewer to decide what the movie is about, or means to them. Many works do have multiple meanings, like this one, but others are about nothing or just have one meaning. People have different opinions of it because that is how they avoid the "central fact of them film," which is the racism, faced in the real world. The problems faced in the film "in his favorite words), of course are still faced today. Perhaps the reactions of people then, are the reactions of those who watch the movie today. You like some of the characters, you hate some of the characters. He says in the review, "anyone who walks into this film expecting answers, is a dreamer or a fool." Then goes on to say, "But anyone who leaves the movie with more intolerance than they walked in with wasn't paying attention." So wouldn't it be only logical to go into the film with no expectations? Instead take in the content and reality of it, as we watch. These songs challenged gender roles because they, or at least some, were very sexual. IT showed really that women had opinions and feelings. Dress you up, talks about wanting to be close and physically touch somebody. Pretender explicitly talks about one night stands and accidentally falling in love. Stay is about someone Madonna has fallen for, and wants them to stay in love.
2.Madonna's music appealed to a lot of people, because it told stories from a women's view. Other's could see that they weren't alone with feelings. There was a period not very long beforehand, where marriage was more about money than love. At this time it was popular, and still is now, for everyone to find their perfect person. 
3. I think Madonna should be considered an important musical figure for the time. She showed a perspective that neither the beatles nor elvis had, NOT BECAUSE SHE WAS A WOMEN. He spoke about that in his music. Nirvana spoke of flaws or imperfection in their music rather than having a perfect life. Mainstream music was about getting the girl and living happily ever after. However, everyone know that wasn't true, and that's what Nirvana's music was about. Cobain was not a fan of his title. In the article the interviewer says about his (cobain's) importance, "he feels he doesn’t have or deserve." He didn't always put 100% into his music or band. He, however, brought his bandmates closer together, if something good were to come from that scenerio. “Just to survive lately I’ve become a lot more withdrawn from the band...I don’t go party after the show; I go straight to my hotel room and go to sleep and concentrate on eating in the morning. I’d rather deal with things like that." Cobain believed that he didn't deserve the title because of all his flaws. However he earned that title BECAUSE he wasn't perfect. THe board shown in In Bloom, was very similar to that of the one they used when they recored the song. He said he wanted to start with a song that he knew and was familar with. He goes into muting parts of the sound until all you could hear was the base playing. One of the main focuses of the music was making sure you could hear the base and that it very prominent in the music. I thought it was very surising how they had so much trouble trying to record "something in the way". They tried recording the song several times but each time it was working out. Nevermind changed the music industry because it was real and raw. When they recorded Something in the way, Kurt was laying on the couch barely singing the song. "Our words was told, our songs was sung. Where we longed for nothin' and were satisfied. Jokin' and talkin' about the world outside." This lyric is important because it says that his dream is for people to speak their minds. Where they were finally satisfied with their lives and stopped wanting more. Another song that was important was,  I shall be free. The song talks about him being drunk and getting girls. At the end, the song goes "Well, ask me why I'm drunk alla time. It levels my head and eases my mind. I just walk along and stroll and sing. I see better days and I do better things." He expresses why he is drinking all the time. It makes him feel better and more at ease. He is able to be more himself without feeling the fear of being judged. Girl from the North Country is also an important song. Dylan talks about a girl who once knew from the area, and asks someone to remind her of him if they see her. He says that "she once was a true love of mine." He asks if she still looks the same recalling her appearance. "See for me if her hair's hanging down

Taking place in San Francisco and continuing to spread across the United States. Jay Thelin, while being interviewed, said that the activities preformed by the older generations, were useless to them. All that their actions lead to was war, especially in Vietnam during the time period. The movement was reflected in clothes, music, eating habits, and lifestyle choices. Many people moved to California, mostly San Francisco, to be apart of the movement. Many people who participated in the movement, also partook in drugs. Drugs, such as LSD and marijuana, were a big part of the counterculture. One of the ideas of the hippie movement, was feeling free. People believed that doing drugs would allow them to feel, and like a different person. Many people who were apart of the hippie movement also took part in vegetarianism or stopped eating meat. A big part of the counterculture, was the music people created and listened to. Particularly, they made and listened to folk music. Singers, such as Bob Dylan, wrote songs about feeling free and falling in love. He talks about a girl he once loved in Girl From the North Country. He recalls how she looked and if anyone saw her, to remind her of him. In another song, I Shall Be Free, he talks about the feeling of being free. How he really only feels it when he's intoxicated. A lot of people understood his music and could put themselves in his place. They used drugs and alcohol in order to help themselves feel free. Everyone, then and now, wants to fall in love, and I think that's just a part of life. From a young age we are taught that once we fall in love we will feel whole. So we spend our lives searching for someone who will make us feel whole. That, I think is really impactful today, as most people just want to find their "other half." As everyone was looking for love, the summer of 1967, was known as the Summer of Love. The narrator, introducing the Summer of Love, said "You may not like it, you may not except it, but you can not ignore it." People were traveling to San Francisco from all over the country to take part, hence where it got the name "The Great Pilgrimage." Many people wanted to join the movement because it made them feel apart of something, another thing many people yearn for in their life. Everyone excepted each other for who they were and didn't expect them to be anyone else. I think this is an incredible time frame because of that. Nowadays, people rarely except others for who they are. They always want people to fit into this mold of what a good, or successful, or bad person should look like. Everyone wants to put each other in a box or put a label on things and make them a certain way. In the counterculture, you could just come as you were and that was enough.
