I love this picture. To me I see a young man who is full of confidence and proud to show off his school. He seems happy and ready to introduce his school to the world. I want my student to feel this way. I like to start my day with students choosing 1 of 3 emotions as they walk in the room (as I tell them good morning). This picture makes me feel excited to see the new scholars make their way into Idea Lopez for the first time. Scholars entering a new school will be full of mixed emotions. Some will come in scared and nervous while others will come in curious and ready to prove themselves. As educators we need to make sure we make every scholar know that they are safe and welcomed each day. What I have learned over the years teaching fifth grade is the way we greet our scholars in the morning determines what kind of day they are going to have. We can change a bad start of a day with just a good morning and a warm joyful smile.

Looking at this picture I remember what it is like to be a new kid on the first day of school. I felt excited, nervous, shy, and hopeful. Kids want to make friends, get a good teacher, and learn the content in a way that isn't overwhelming. As a classroom teacher we will be the leader to make each student feel safe and respected.
