In this reading strategy teachers read the book aloud, showing the student fluent reading, and then they read the book again and again for several days. First day of reading is for students enjoyment, second and third day of reading is when the teacher teaches concepts about reading. The last day of reading is when the students focus on particular words when reading the story. The students actively participate in the reading.

Advantages:

Introduces new vocabulary.

Allows teacher to model fluent reading.

Allows students to enjoy reading in a nonthreatening environment.

A way to introduce books that would otherwise be beyond the comprehension of a student if they tried to read it alone.

Disadvantages:

Students can be potentially left behind. When the class reads all together there could possibly be one student that doesn't understand.

Can be difficult for a teacher to assess student learning.

Can be hard to find an appropriate book that is good for all the students.

http://www.readwritethink.org/professional-development/strategy-guides/shared-reading-opportunities-direct-30823.html
