"A devoted Boy Scout, he was forced to become part of the Hitler Youth, the youth arm of the Nazi Party, when the Nazis banned the organization in 1935" (Blakemore, Erin).

However, in 1938 at age 13, he quit the Hitler Youth after participating in Kristallnacht; a night where Nazis burned synagogues, Jewish property, and attacked Jews.

In 1941 he started training as a voluntary secretary of the Chairman of the Mormon Community. During this time he came into contact with an illegal Young Communist Group in Altona. During this time he convinced other like minded teens into resisting Nazi ideologies.

The wallpaper is significant in Helmuth's story. This is the execution room at the Plotzensee Prison in Berlin. He was beheaded on October 27, 1942 (German Resistance Memorial Center - Biographie).

"Their aim was to correct the lies in the National Socialist Wehrmacht reports and news broadcasts" (German Resistance Memorial Center - Biographie).

Helmuth saw the injustice towards the Jews and knew he had to reveal the harsh treatment to others.

"Using carbon paper and a couple of typewriters borrowed from the branch, Hübener began producing anti-Nazi leaflets relaying information from the forbidden broadcasts alongside his own commentary. With the help of Schnibbe, Wobbe and several other teenage acquaintances that he recruited, Hübener distributed leaflets throughout Hamburg over the course of 10 months. One of these teenagers was Gerhard Düwer, who worked as an apprentice with Hübener at the Hamburg Social Authority" (Ortix, Amy)

"Latter-day Saints and community members in Hamburg and Berlin, Germany, gathered Jan. 8 in events commemorating Hübener’s life and legacy on what would have been his 100th birthday. In Hamburg, Stadtteilschule Helmuth Hübener, a secondary school named after Hübener, held an assembly in his honor" (Ortix, Amy).

The schools hosted speeches, musical performances, and more in order to honor Helmuth.
