Maybe when it comes to a present it could be a simple gift from a family tradition or maybe a toy truck. What you find significant and meaningful about your artist is what will drive your piece, so if you want to particularly focus on use of song lyric, the artist’s experiences, or their inspiration/s, each has a valid contribution to the art they create, and ultimately what you enjoy about it.

You could use materials to conceal something beneath the distortion.

For example: 
To the audience, using highly patterned or chaotic material could be interpreted as a way to distract, avert the gaze away from another significant part of the painting, or to solely focus on the distorted subject.
