I am aware that translation involves two languages, but today, i learned that translation is also when written text is adapted into a play and also when rewritten for children's understanding. That translating also includes translating from the SAME language. I would like to further understand translation and maybe explore career prospects.

Coming in, I was aware that translation isn't just simply about converting words from one language to another, however the class today had shown me that the process of translating is a bit more intricate than it seems, such as when I learned that it has been a widely studied subject since the 20th century. During the class, it was mentioned that AI usage enhances the translating process, and I would love to know more about how AI would transcend limitations such as cultural nuances.

I already knew that some translations are word-for-word, while others focus more on meaning. Today, I learned that religious texts like the Bible and Buddhist sutras helped in shaping translation theories. I also found out that translation studies only became a real academic subject in the late 20th century, as before that, it was mostly a tool for learning languages. I am curious about how well AI can compare to human translators. I would also love to know more about how translators deal with words or ideas that don’t exist in other languages.

Before class, I knew that translation is the process of converting text from one language to another. I also knew that translation deals with written text, while interpretation is for spoken language. After the class, I have learned that translation has a long history and translation is not just about converting text but also about maintaining the meaning and cultural context of the original context. Actually, I would like to know the challenges translators face like untranslatable words and cultural differences. I am also interested in how machine translation, like Google Translate, compares to human translation in terms of accuracy.

I just learned so many useful input to use in daily life. Before this I only understand the word "Translation" as converting language A to language B. But today I learned that it is more than just translating verbal or written language but also signs ! I wonder what else I will be learning through out this semester in this course and I hope to properly apply it to real life.

Before class, I thought translation was simply converting one language into another, but I didn’t realize it could also involve translating language into non-verbal signs. During the lesson, I learned about the concept of ST (Source Text) and TT (Target Text), as well as Jacobson’s categories of translation. Now, I’m curious about how advanced AI technology operates behind translation and which is more challenging, interpretation or translation.

Coming in, I'm well aware of the differences between translation and interpretation. One is written and the opposite is orally used. From today's class, one of the things I learnt is that translation isn't just merely translating one language to another but also through various channels, including signs. In the future, I would love to know which is more valuable, challenging, and high demand in the field: translating or interpreting.

I know translation as converting words from one language to another language, and nothing more than that. After yesterday’s class, I realised that it could be more than that and not every words need to be translated. After knowing about the “intralingual translation”, I’m aware that all this while, during in secondary school, I used to do intralingual translation ( Classic Malay to Standard Malay ). Well, I’m looking forward to explore more about translation, especially about the history and the development.

Before this, I just used Interlingual Translation (before even knowing the term) when I was joining EduTour, and it was wacky, directly translating Japanese into English when talking to the UU Students. Now, after today's class, I realised how I understand them better by doing a bit of Interlingual Translation, as it is fluid and more logical to understand. Though, I would love to know more about Intersemiotic Translation, as the transmutation of a translation is a very interesting concept to be explored.

I thought translation was just translating texts, sentences from one's language to another language like I have always done: translating Malay sentences to English for my international friends. However, after yesterday's class, I found out Interlingual translation is the term for this particular action that I have been doing! Im looking forward to know more and i wonder how technologies would handle translations when it involves the cultural aspect.

What I know

Some translations can be inaccurate due to budget cuts which in turn will hurt many industries and sectors like gaming, public relations, STEM, music and even education.

Translation is important as it will help many to understand other groups better and prevent misleading.

Aspects I learnt

In translation, we have Interlingual and Interlingual aspects. It is important to distinguish what kind of translation is happening in real life.

What I wish to learn

Famous translation texts or orals. Many texts and orals become popular due to many people sharing with each other.

Translation industry in Malaysia. I wish we could learn more about it as many books from Malaysia have the chance to soar if publishers start localising it to other countries.

From my own understanding, translation is mostly about translating a certain language to another language that we ourselves understand. For example, translating Malay Language to English Language. But after attending the first class, i realized that there is much more about than translating words, but symbols, signs and culture.

One aspect of translation I already knew is that it goes beyond word-for-word conversion because you need to truly understand the meaning of the text rather than take it at face value. I was also aware that different languages have unique structures, so a direct translation does not always work.

From Week 1’s class, I learnt about interlingual and intralingual translation. Interlingual translation involves translating from one language to another, such as converting Malay into English. Intralingual translation, on the other hand, takes place within the same language, such as rewording or simplifying a complex sentence for better understanding. Jo also mentioned that technology has made translation more widespread and accessible, which explains why people can translate more quickly.

Moving forward, I want to learn more about how professional translators handle difficult texts, especially those with idioms or culturally specific references. I am also curious about the different translation strategies used for various types of content, such as literature versus legal documents.

Before this course, I only knew what translation and interpretation actually means which is translate any phrase or reading material for better understanding generally. That was it. I already knew and prepared myself on how deep this course will go but after the introduction of the course, I may realised that this subject actually go way beyond my understanding and expectations. I learned that there are 3 categories of translation which were intralingual, interlingual, and intersemiotic. I only familiar with interlingual, which is basically translation between different languages. Now I am introduced to intralingual which is translation of the same language when 'rewording' process happen to simplifies complex phrases that are hard to understand for beginners while intersemiotic is 'transmutation' which is an interpretation of phrases or words to verbal signs like movie adaptation. I do wish to learn more on how most translation industries operates and study for better interpretation accuracy.

I am absolutely excited to learn about something I've been self-teaching, and what I've learned so far did not disappoint. Of course, due to it being a brand new subject in a new semester, I am a bit slow in catching up. But it does not dampen the excitement. I hope to learn many new things this semester as well under the guidance of our lecturers.
