Charles Grandison Finney was an evangelistic Presbyterian Minister and he became one of the most influential and important people of revivalism from the 1820s and 1830s. When he was in upstate New York he helped launch passionate revivals in towns along the Erie Canal and that helped him become successful in this practice. He mobilized women since they were very appealed by his efforts of revivalism. Gradually, he developed a large following among the satisfied citizens of the region. Finney’s revivalism became a call for a crusade against personal immortality.

The Second Great Awakening reflected romanticism full of emotion and appeal to the supernatural. The movement rejected skepticism, deism, Unitarianism, and rationalism from the Enlightenment. It occurred it several episodes and different denominations. The most effective form of this was evangelizing where revival meetings emerged across the nation. Circuit riders (itinerant ministers) were also a crucial part of the reform movement. They sought out people in the remote frontier and would help them establish relationships with other families near them and attempt to convert them too. The reason for this movement was to spread the Protestant religions across the nation to people in cities and on the frontier. Their goal was to convert as many people as possible to their specific denomination (Methodist, Baptist, etc.) and increase membership in the church. To achieve their goals, they held camp meetings (revivals) which attracted hundreds of new converts to Protestant denominations with emotional preaching and establishing personal connections with God. Some of the results were a great change in the religious climate, a surge in membership of Protestant churches, and the founding of many seminaries and mission societies.

The movement's goals allowed for the belief that every individual was capable of salvation and that they could achieve this salvation by themselves. This ideology reached great success and met its goals specifically in Rochester New York where plenty of women found the message by Charles Grandison Finney to be an appealing message that they pronounced to their families. This granted Finney access to their male relatives and a wave of revivalism which led to a grand success in the movement.
