Pershing in his early years gained the nickname "Black Jack," because of his strict adherence to West Point regulations and his previous service in the 10th Calvary with African American's. Upon getting himself back into the 10th Calvary he found himself in close action. It was said that under fire, the was the bravest man.
He suffered a great loss in his life, one beyond words. His wife and three daughters were lost at their living quarters at the Presidio of San Fransisco. That tragic loss happened in August of 1915. He threw his grief into his work.

He was able to successfully be one of the first commanders to employ the managerial attributes of a commander. Due to the War to End all Wars, had to coordinate with not only his troops and country. He had to coordinate with allies from different nations. He had received guidance that he is directed to cooperate with forces of different countries, but the United States forces must remain separate and maintain their own identity.
Reading about the man, it is very difficult to find any weaknesses that can really be discussed.

Pershing was one of the first generals to have to cooperate with foreign troops to achieve a common goal. In today's age that is so common place, not just in the military. So many companies have locations in different countries. A great leader needs to take a lot more into consideration and more interests than just ones nation.

General Pershing lived a life of great personal achievement and great personal tragedies. As a father myself, I am not sure if I could have ever recovered from losing a child. He lost his wife and 3 of his 4 children. How he was able to cope and become one of our nations if not the greatest generals is an amazement in itself.

This biggest notable accomplishment is to be promoted to a rank that had never been held by anyone before. The rank of General of the Armies. This was due to his success in World War I, at which point he returned to the United States an American Hero. He even served as an advisor to World War II's greatest generals, Patton and Marshall

Nicholas - this is pretty good...and I can see how you were trying to work the organization into a better flow. The boxes can move using the mouse...there are also other formats that present the material a different way and that can allow connections with arrows. No matter - this works.

You pointed out something important: Pershing was the first to have to placate and cooperate strong Allies. Today, the U.S. is the king ally...but in 1917, the U.S. was the junior partner! Big difference...yet Pershing navigated it better than anyone.

You mentioned Belleau Wood...but what was Pershing's involvement here? Why is this an important "first battle" that then informed Pershing's future ideas of employing an American Army?
