"When not the Moon disclose a sign" - This gives the image of the night sky being completely blacked out. There must be cloud cover because not the mon nor the stars can be seen. 
"The Bravest - grope a little - and sometimes hit a Tree Directly in the Forehead" - This example gives the image of someone reaching out into the darkness to help find their way. For example, "We grow accustomed to the Dark" and "fit our Vision to the Dark." The author capitalizes "the Dark" as if it were a living thing with a name. The hyphens within the poem are also used to create emphasis. Separating each statements and letting it linger in the readers mind, giving each fragment importance. "Fit our Vision to the Dark" almost likes fitting a key in a keyhole although vision is nothing like that. 
"And so of larger - Darkness" Darkness does not have a size so here it just means how dark it is, how pitch black.
