Genetically modifying plants basically means that a DNA sequence that is thought to improve the plant in some way, is inserted to the plant and then grown in a greenhouse. While often genetic modification is used to give the plant something new, with potatoes it's used to avoid unwanted characteristics. It is used to reduce browning and bruising that causes many potatoes to be thrown away when they're actually totally edible. Another trait that GMO is used to avoid in potatoes is a chemical called asparagine, which can be converted to a carcinogen in high heat like in fryers. There is only one potato that is permitted to be sold is the White Russet potato that is modified by J.R. Simplot Company. (GMO)

Genetically modifying potatoes, and almost anything in general could cause political issues. It can often cause a lot of disagreement whether the genetic modification should be done or not. People's opinions in these things are often very controversial and that could potentially lead to political issues, which could at the same time bring bad reputation to these potatoes. Also the possible other issues like environmental and ethical issues with genetically modified potatoes could result in political issues.

Changing a plant's DNA could be an ethical issue. Many foods and plants are important for different cultures, and some people could think it's wrong to change the DNA of a plant that is significant in their culture or life.

Also, when we modify the plant's genes, the change in the DNA can cause some people allergic reactions. A gene that is taken from somewhere else and then put to the potato could cause someone an allergic reaction if they are allergic to the added or modified gene.

Potatoes easily get bruised in their delivery or when they're being cooked. This genetic modification would reduce these characteristics of the potatoes which causes many people to think that the potato isn't edible and throwing away many potatoes that could have still been eaten.

It also reduces the occurrence of a bad carcinogen which can appear in high temperatures when potatoes produce asparagine which can be converted to this carcinogen.

The creators of this potato benefit from the modification, because it is the only type of genetic modification that is allowed for potatoes at the moment, so if people want to buy GMO potatoes they will have to buy them from this farmer. They will benefit economically for creating and selling this potato, and also get fame and recognition for being the inventor and creator of the only genetically modified potato that is permitted to be sold.

For a consumer, GMO potatoes could be harmful and beneficial. Like discussed in the ethical factor, this potato could give people surprising allergic reactions and be bad for their health. However, having the option of buying genetically modified potatoes if you want, is beneficial. Especially the reduced occurrence of carcinogen is beneficial to people's health since carcinogens are not healthy. It is good and beneficial that everybody can make their own decision whether they want to buy modified potatoes or not.
