Natural Disasters and Food
- Natural disasters affect entire communities. When a natural disaster such as a flood or cyclone occurs, it causes vast amounts of damage; especially to farmers and agriculturalists. In Australia, agriculturalists are extremely vulnerable to disruptions in the food supply at several times during the year. In Queensland crops such as capsicum, tomato, eggplant, pumpkin, cucumber, beans and corn were ruined. This makes it incredibly hard for farmers (in particular, not as wealthy ones) to continue their business in agriculture. In many cases, crops and plantations are completely destroyed, leaving farmers with nothing. Crops that do survive are of poor quality and do not supply farmers with a suitable amount of money to fund daily requirements. Infrastructures used to transport the foods could be damaged due to the disaster. Soils may be eroding, meaning farmers can no longer farm the land and water sources may be impaired. Prices in food will increase drastically. There will be a high demand for foods that there is little or no supply of. This leads retailers to look and rely on other countries such as the US to source the highly demanded products.

In general, food production methods, how far the food has to travel to reach the plate and competition that is faced in the marketplace (usually seen between differing companies). The currency exchange rate will affect the price of foods.

cyclone debbie will mean prices of our tropical fruit and vegetables will go up across the whole of Australia. Some retailers may have to look overseas to source products. foods affected could include banana's, capsicum, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumber, beans, corn and pumpkin. It is even more important to buy locally after an event like a Cyclone because this helps rebuild our economy again.

Food prices are affected by a heap of local and international factors. Some of these factors include; food production, preparation and transport costs, the amount of competition in the marketplace, regulations and policies, weather and climate conditions, trade, oil prices and currency exchange rates. All these factors make the price of foods quite unpredictable and fluctuating.

Debbie:
Prices will go down across all of Australia. Retailers will most likely have to seek foods from overseas, whereas big Australian supermarkets will just have raised their prices on affected foods. 1 billion dollars of damage has been done to just crops alone. Foods such as tomato, capsicum, eggplant, cucumber, pumpkin, beans and corn are the foods that have been damaged the most. Mr Zimmerman said that to support those affected by cyclone Debbie, we should continue to buy foods that are being sold by those particular farmers, so that they can maintain a steady income despite their loss.

Eating healthy:
Many countries have natural disasters that destroys their food. Australia has disasters like floods, cyclones and droughts which heavily affect consumers availability. Availability is a major factor, some people wont have an adequate source to buy foods and turn to take away.

Cyclone Debbie
Sugar cane, bananas and other tropical foods will increase in price along with capsicum, tomato, eggplant, pumpkin, cucumber, beans and corn.

The damage bill may be as high as 1 billion dollars without including infrastructure damage.

The amount of money made by the farming of sugarcane was 850 million dollars previously, now it will only be a small percentage of this.

The crop damage will affect all australians and food prices will increase. The demand for foods remains high but the supply has drastically dropped. The lack of supply for a high demand will affect many families and businesses.

While Australians may be forced to buy from overseas this year if we want to help the farmers rebuild their farms and lives we need to start buying australian foods asap. This will help ourselves as the prices will gradually go down as the farmers can begin producing foods again.

Eating healthy
Eating healthy is increasingly becoming harder and harder. With less time and less money people will often revert to buying fast foods.

Pricing is the biggest driver of fast foods. Fast foods are often cheap and families will choose this seemingly cheaper options. Remote communities will also struggle to get fresh foods as it is harder to transport food to remote places. So people will choose chips and unfresh foods which are cheaper and more accessible.

Time is another factor. People choose to eat fast foods as they are "fast".
