African American slaves created various communities within each plantation in the deep South in their limited free time, which included marriages, a relaxation day set by the plantation owner prior to a large harvest, husbands travelling to different plantations to visit their wives, and the influence of the Bible. The slaves’ limited time of interaction was enough to spread ideas through the word of mouth, and the many gatherings of other slaves in these short areas of non-working hours spread tradition around, like the unique genre of music played at weddings, or the thought of fleeing the plantations. All of the aspects of African American communities which cultivated general ideas were the outcome of various interactions with other slaves.

One strategy that African Americans employed to retain their filial connections was the husbands seeking permission from plantation owners to visit other significant family members who have been relocated to different plantations. The paternal dominated structure of African American families is evident in this strategy, as the husbands would mainly labor hard and efficient in the fields in order to present a trustworthy image to their owners. If the owner deemed the slave as competent, he would allow permission for the member to visit his family, mainly the wife. Marriage was considered holy and permanent by most slaves, as the influence of the Bible also altered their principles, and thus plantation owners would allow slaves to reconnect with their families to maintain the facade in order to keep slavery on their fields.
