Climate change is not just an environmental issue, nor is it one of many issues; it is the biggest justice issue we face, affecting most (if not all) the social issues we care about. Our conversation pulled on many threads of the issue –- from reducing our individual and institutional carbon footprints to addressing the overwhelming emotions of responding to an issue that endangers human civilization itself. Global climate disruption threatens whole ecosystems and not just individual species, and requires healing and restoring our relationship with the more-than-human world. We discussed many aspects and levels of response: science education, building solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, letter-writing to legislators every erev shabbat, the impact of climate on the situation in Israel/Palestine (e.g. the northern border of the Negev desert may extend into Lebanon), on Syrian and other refugee issues and on human rights, learning about and building alliances with NGOs and business groups, going solar, and working for a Carbon Tax. We also talked about the dangers of choosing wrong technological solutions – e.g., fracking in order to use so–called cleaner natural gas, or expanding nuclear power. We especially noted the continuing Fukushima disaster, which is producing deadly synergies with climate change to undermine the health of the entire ocean. Can we build more resilient communities that are prepared for climate change? Can we harness the climate crisis to respond in a united manner to the many issues we face, in order to transform our world? We took inspiration from the Seventh Day Initiative in southern Indiana to reach out beyond the usual political suspects to include evangelicals and conservatives, who like us have an equal interest in a healthy planet.
